  1. glad i could help. i've always felt that hip-hop was misunderstood, let me know how things go, altho i wouldnt be surprised if he has the same feelings, parents dont often change their opinions on things from one minute to the next.
  2. see this is the thing, some parents have it in their head that because an artist talks about guns, sex and drugs that their kids will do it. this is why the whole PA sticker came out, because some Washington wives were concerned about it. however, studies show that most kids arent influenced by that stuff and if they are its because they come from a broken home and or have some mental instability. i know confronting your dad right now might not be the best thing, but try to show him that you listen to Will Smith and Run-DMC and try and show him how those are good lyrics and try to show him that you are mature enough to not act on other lyrics that dont fit your values and that he's raised you well enough for that not to affect you. just be glad u got some good music out of it like Run DMC cuz thats a great album and ATCQ is always dope too. TED: responding to Ted's quote about PE, you might be surprised at the controversy surrounding PE in the late 80's. altho they were no NWA, Ice Cube, 2 Live Crew, or Ice-T, they still had some controversy on their albums for "voilence, anti-Semitic thems (racism basically) and militantly black separatist" and that's a direct quote from the book i have about music censorship. Chuck D's response was long as usual, but he said that he is trying to make the next generation responsible and get out the mess they're in to lead a better life. Professor Griff's albums were also banned from many record stores and considered "obscene" for the same reasons mentioned above, although there was hardly any profanity. also, "Hazy Shade of a Criminal" was banned from MTV for a riot scene back in the day. in addition in 1996, a Jewish advocacy group called for boycotts on PE's single "Swindlers List" saying once again that it is anti-semitic (racist) because it alludes to Jews in controlling the banking industry and the words "six" and "millions" referring to the Holocaust. Chuck D responded saying no harm was intended, that "six" referred to the six major record companies and "millions" referred to the million man march.
  3. its a tough call. LL is making albums more consistantly, but i could see Will putting a rap album out in 10 years, and LL might be retired, but LL will have put out more albums than Will would've because of Will's acting. if we're including acting, i think Will wll last longer, he could act forever.
  4. yeah i had that same problem and still have it to some extent. my parents didnt like my listening to 2Pac and other rappers that i was listenin to other than JJFP when i was like 13 and 14. they took my albums away, but they were all burnt. now im 17 and they deal with it. i think i've shown them that i've matured, that i dont let the artists' message influence my decisions, and that the music i listen to has some value, at least better than that 50 cent and lil jon stuff on tv however, my parents would at least acknowledge that Public Enemy has a positive message to their music. i am reading a book right now called Parental Advisory: Music Censorship in America and it's all about how those explicit stickers came about. the reason PE's album has a sticker isn't for vulgar language, but for some violence and the revolutionary themes in the music. the problem is that the message is misunderstood. it is about inner city ghetto expressing themselves, but it's not about rage or anything. it's about educating other black people about what they can do to create a fairer world. unfortunately, some parents are too lazy to look at the whole picture. all they want to hear is the cuss words and words about violence, but they dont want to hear that maybe the artist is saying guns are bad, but they only hear guns. maybe the artist is trying to educate people and isnt glorifying violence or sex but parents dont sit down and listen to the full content. unfortunately, im afraid there's not a whole lot u can do but wait time and hope your dad will start to treat u like an adult in your music choices when u get a little older. i've tried to play good rap in front of my parents like Run-DMC, Will Smith, and Blackalicious, but they havent caught on too much. my dad likes Christian rap (T-Bone, Cross Movement) but doesnt seem too impressed with rap. you might not be able to convince your parents to like it, but dont let that stop u from enjoyin it.
  5. haha lovin that IP tool aren't ya Wes? yup :lolsign:
  6. we all know its you posting renegade, why not post under your name?
  7. ok let's stop this AJ doesn't like Jay-Z and thats fine, lots of people here don't. AJ likes old school hip-hop and Jay-Z is not that. u can't tell him he doesnt have the right to speak on the subject just because u disagree with him and u dont have the right to tell him to shut the **** up. AJ has been part of the forums for 7 or 8 years, you havent even been here for 1, so try to learn some respect to some of the knowledgeable hip hop heads around here. AJ never made it a personal attack against anybody, you just did.
  8. that was crazy. insane. tim and chris did some good summations and follow up questions. lerkot man, you're in a whole different world!
  9. best moments: Lerkot: i hope to get people to yoin Tim: you want people to what? Lerkot: i want them to yoin the religion Lerkot: well, once i had a friend Tim: oh, you had a friend? Lerkot: yes i had a friend, and he liked music... Lerkot: my mom lives in my house Lerkot: anyone who thinks Will was an actor before he was a rapper should die Tim: you want them to die? Lerkot: well, maybe break a leg or somethin Lerkot: eventually, it might turn into a cult Tim: the JJFP religion: like Hitler, but in a good way
  10. it's quite sad in a way, but entertaining nontheless. i'm gonna yump on board with Lerkot's religion :lolsign:
  11. Oh and your weren't gonna check it out if it was just some act from the UK, :bat: u got that right :lolsign:
  12. for some reason i thought the same as FuQ, that is was some UK act or somethin, and i didnt know it was rap. since it's Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, i will have to check this out.
  13. the cover looks pretty cool, lets hope theres some unreleased or rare remixes on that or i wont be buying it right away
  14. i don't have too much of an opinion on this since i don't watch a whole lot of Oprah and i don't listen to a whole lot of Ludacris. i think it's ok if she called out Ludacris for his lyrical content about women if that offended her personally. i think going into the violence thing might be going a little far. i agreed with this quote from Ted: studies have showed that most kids aren't influenced by violent messages in music. i know i listen some of that music and i listen to my morals and values first before i listen to what the artist is saying. i mean, if the kids do something because of what an artist says it's because they had bad parenting or have had emotional problems in their lives or they have something mentally wrong with them. unfortunately, bad parenting and emotional problems seem to be increasing among teens these days compared to 20 years ago. in my opinion tho, any kid that commits and act of violence because of a rapper's words should get help because it's not normal. don't get me twisted either, i don't support all that fake stuff in artists albums, but they are entertainers and thats just part of it and today its all about the money and thats what sells.
  15. Black Star, Danger Doom, and Little Brother are groups out there. of course 2 of them are short term groups and Little Brother is underground, but Little Brother is really good. i think u should give them a listen AJ.
  16. they know somethin that we dont know. tim said he wont be sharin secrets on cub shooter 1 anytime soon tho :lolsign:
  17. i've gone throught that before where nothing goes right and i just wanted to lay in bed and go to sleep but i couldnt because my mind kept thinkin of everything wrong. i can't offer much advice except stay strong because it will probably get better, in my cases they always got better after a week or so. if u need inspiration or some people to make u feel happier then go on this board cuz we'll be here 4 u.
  18. 2Pac - Baby Don't Cry (Keep Ya Head Up II) it just changed to Blackalicious - Purest Love
  19. nice to see respect shown, however that thread starter was out of his mind. WS doesnt get played on the radio that much.
