I, Robot Tuesday - July 20, 2004 DeMarco Williams The Popular Science-inspired concept presented here is actually kind of spooky: fully-functioning robots as housekeepers, day-care providers, trashmen and protectors. The idea, of course, pleases forward-thinking liberals. But what of the people who’ll be put out of work? Or what of the shear laziness potential that’s sure to rise with an increase in dutiful machines? Will Smith’s Del Spooner wonders about all of that. He’s the old-school type that, if he went to the grocery store and the only open aisle was the worker-free ‘U-Scan’ line, he’d would wait an additional 30 minutes simply to have his items scanned by a real person. The man simply doesn’t like robots. It’s the kind of disdain where everything they do is questioned. So, it makes for interesting cinema that Smith plays a zealous Chicago cop living in the year 2035, a time when robots are like Kanye West guest spots – almost everywhere. Bruce Greenwood’s Bill Gates-like character is the reason all the lil’ C-3POs are household staples. His company, U.S.R., is on the verge of the largest machine shipment ever when an acclaimed scientist behind the project mysteriously crashes several stories to the company’s lobby. Smith, of course, feels that some digitized digits are responsible for the crime. Everyone else –the police chief, Smith’s grandma, the cute scientist helping on the investigation— calls him crazy. By about halfway through this Issac Asimov book adaptation, you’ll call any Hollywood producer crazy who even considers doing another summer action romp without Jada Pinkett’s husband for the lead. As Will investigates the murder, he’s equally charismatic during interrogations, dramatic in chase sequences and comedic everywhere in between. Towards the movie’s end, there’s a moment when Smith and Greenwood are talking and the inquiring cop lets out a serious sneeze. “Sorry, I’m allergic to bull****,” Smith says. Not 15 minutes later, he and the good scientist (Bridget Moynahan) are atop the USR building, battling a gang of robots (that look really impressive, by the way) in a bang-bang action sequence that leaves you and the camera dizzied. The whole movie moves at that rabid pace. As you’d expect, Smith comes out on top – much in the same way you will for checking out this action flick. SOURCE: Hiphopdx.com

Will Smith Returns To Rap, Tops Movies By Jigsaw and Kim N. Cooper Date: 7/20/2004 3:34 pm Will Smith and his hit movie "i Robot" has smacked Spider Man off his sticky top slot after the rapper/actor's latest effort raked in a whopping $53.3 million over the weekend. And Will intends to capitalize off the furor by reestablishing his rap career. While he was tight-lipped about the project he did reveal scant details about how he intended to comeback to Hip-Hop. "I got a single coming out in about six weeks it's called "Switch," Will told AllHipHop.com "It's produced by Kwame." Kwame, the popular rapper, has been resurrected as K-Million and he recently produced Lloyd Banks hit "On Fire." Furthermore, he stated that there was going to be a Hip-Hop dance to accompany the song. "You know we got all of that. You know I bring the heat, that's what I do. If it's starting to feel hot big Will must be in the area," he stated with the swagger of a person who collects $20 million per film. While Will has had a number one movie a number of times, with monster flicks like "Independence Day," he stated this film was a departure from his others. In "i Robot," he acted as executive producer of the film, a new level of control. Of the move, he explained, "I think that there are a lot of filmmakers, actors, and directors that wouldn't get a shot at Hollywood, and I wanna open up the world to film for a lot of people that may not get a shot in this business." Over the course of his career, Will has sold over 25 million albums and his catalog (along with DJ Jazzy Jeff) includes hits like "Summertime," "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," "Just the Two of Us," "Parents Just Don't Understand," and others. Movie-wise, he's had tremendous success with films like "Bad Boys (I & II)," "Men in Black (1 & 2)," "Independence Day," "Ali" and others. Will Smith's 'I, Robot' Debuts at No. 1 July 18, 1:30 PM ET By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer Will Smith has the summer crowd well programmed. Smith's sci-fi thriller "I, Robot" was his latest No. 1 July debut, opening with $52.25 million and bumping "Spider-Man 2" from the top spot at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates Sunday. If the numbers hold when final figures are released Monday, "I, Robot" would be Smith's best debut ever, coming in just ahead of "Independence Day," "Men in Black" and "Men in Black II," all July premieres that opened in the $50 million to $52 million range. "My God, this guy opens movies," said Bruce Snyder, head of distribution at 20th Century Fox, which released "I, Robot." "He's just so likable, he takes something like science fiction, which can be a little cold, and he makes it warm and entertaining." After two weekends in first place, "Spider-Man 2" slipped to No. 2 with $24.2 million, lifting its total domestic haul to $301.7 million after 19 days. The movie crossed the $300 million mark three days faster than the original "Spider-Man," according to distributor Sony. Twelve days into its run, "Spider-Man 2" had grossed about $20 million more than the original Spider-Man" had at the same point. That improves its chances of exceeding the $403.7 million total domestic take for Spider-Man, the top-grossing movie of 2002. The weekend's other new wide release, Hilary Duff's romance "A Cinderella Story," premiered in third place with $13.8 million. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" came in at No. 5 with $7 million, raising its domestic total to $93.8 million. Moore's assault on President Bush over the Sept. 11 attacks has become the undisputed box-office champ among documentaries, passing the $84.4 million domestic haul of the IMAX film "Everest." Inspired by the short-story collection of Isaac Asimov, "I, Robot" stars Smith as a police detective in 2035 who suspects a robot has committed a murder. Along with the "Men in Black" movies and "Independence Day," "I, Robot" joins "Wild Wild West" and last year's "Bad Boys II" in Smith's unbroken string of summer smashes. "He's Mr. July," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. "He's the perfect summer action star. He's a guy who seems like somebody fun to hang out with, but you the guy can kick some butt when he has to." "A Cinderella Story" stars Duff as a saintly California teen slaving away for her odious stepmother and stepsisters in a modern update of the fairy tale. The movie drew mainly from Duff's teen and preteen fan base, with young girls and mothers and daughters making up most of the audience, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., which released "A Cinderella Story." In narrow release, Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger's "The Door in the Floor" had a healthy debut, taking in $444,983 in 47 theaters. The family drama was adapted from John Irving's novel "A Widow for One Year." "Maria Full of Grace," which won the award as audience favorite at last January's Sundance Film Festival, also opened strongly in limited release, taking in $124,000 at seven theaters. The drama centers on a young Colombian woman who signs on as a "mule" carrying heroin to the United States. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at North American theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will be released Monday.
