Big-eared Will Smith goes on charm offensive
September 15, 2004

By Tanya Farber

A philosopher, a flirt and above all, a comedian.

That's how the charming, pixie-faced Will Smith came across at the Palazzo Hotel in Montecasino, Johannesburg, last night, when he addressed a room full of journalists as part of his promotion of I, Robot, which opens here on Friday.

He burst into the room with a plate of food, a gigantic smile and a raucous cheer for all those around him.

Asked if he ever looked in the mirror and had a strange moment of disbelief where he said to the reflection of the megastar in front of him, "I am Will Smith", he came out with a response that filled the room with hilarity.

"No," he confessed, "I look in the mirror and say, 'You would be so much more famous if your ears weren't so big', and sometimes, I
look in the mirror and say, 'Do you have any idea how much money you would make if you looked like Brad Pitt?"

When another journalist, who before asking his question confessed that he had not yet seen the movie, Smith pretended to be furious and walk off in disgust.

At a later stage, when he was told by a woman in the group that she "had not thought of him as a sex symbol until she saw I, Robot", he jumped out of his seat once again and made his way over to her.

Flexing the muscles of his upper arm, he allowed her to have a squeeze and then said: "Now tell me I am not a sex symbol."

When the discussion turned more serious about the part he could play as a role model for black youngster, he began waxing lyrical in a philosophical tone, but then lightened the mood once again by saying: "I like saving the world in my movies. Nobody can name another black guy who's ever saved the world!"

And, on his role as Muhammad Ali in the biopic Ali, he said: "Playing Ali gave me the opportunity to define certain intangibles like greatness. So, it was a bittersweet opportunity to understand what greatness is but to know that I am not great.

"I was like, 'Wow, I get to play Ali', and then the movie was over and it was like, 'Damn, I am just Will'."

Still on the topic of past and present roles he has had in movies, he joked around that "when you get to kiss someone in a movie, it's like legal cheating", and when asked who he would choose if he could be cast alongside any other film star, deceased or alive, he replied: "If it's an adult movie, I would like it to be Halle Berry."

He then added: "Seriously, though, I think I would choose Sidney Poitier. I mean, how does that guy stay so calm?"

With that, he did an impersonation of the great actor, and again had the room in fits of laughter.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince were back together again when Will Smith dropped by Melbourne's Metropolis Studios with his old pal Jeff Townes to record his next single.

Metropolis in-house engineer Haydn Buxton assisted with the recording.

Smith spent less than 48 hours in Australia on his promotional visit for 'I Robot' and managed to knock off 5 hours of recording time at Metropolis.

As DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince, their 1988 album 'He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper' went on to sell more than 2.5 million units in the USA fuelled by the success of the hit single 'Parents Just Don't Understand'.

In the 90's they had further hits with 'Summertime' and 'Boom Shake The Room' but by 1993, Smith decided to concentrate on his acting career and went on to star in 'Six Degrees of Separation', 'Independence Day' and 'Men In Black'.

After the split, Townes became a producer and set up the company A Touch Of Jazz.
