EXCLUSIVE: ‘Karate Kid’ Ralph Macchio Breaks Silence On Will Smith Remake We all know a “Karate Kid” remake starring Will Smith’s son Jaden is coming. We all know that some people are unsure that this is a good thing. But still, even as the project has been rendered wobbly with controversy, Ralph Macchio refuses to sweep the leg. VIDEO! http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/01/19/exclu...l-smith-remake/ “Listen, here’s my take on it,” the 80’s icon told MTV News on Sunday, making his first-ever public statements addressing the remake of the film that made him famous. “I think Jaden - you know, Will Smith’s kid - the kid’s got chops. He’s young; he’s like eleven…That story will work forever, when well-told. So, it makes sense in that respect.” Without offering to teach young Smith-san to catch a fly with chopsticks, however, Macchio was eager to offer a bit of teacher-like advice: “From my personal view, the filling the void of what Mr. Miyagi was - and the magic of that character - is going to be the toughest task,” he said of the potential landmines to be tiptoed around by Smith, his producer/dad, writer Chris Murphy and “Pink Panther 2” director Harald Zwart. “I (also) don’t know where the romantic story-arc goes (with Smith’s Daniel) at that age.” Macchio, in Park City to publicize his Slamdance flick “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead,” added that friends have been sending him the latest news about the Smith remake ever since it was announced. “(The ‘Karate Kid’ remake is) going to be interesting, from the respect that I think if they intend on copying some of the elements that are still present now (it won’t be easy),” Macchio said of the original film’s classic moments. “Reruns of the movie play a lot on television, so the now-generation knows it. It’s not like ‘Ocean’s 11′. When they remade that, no one had seen the other one in thirty years.” Still, as a veteran actor who hopes to direct his first feature film soon, the 47-year-old icon insisted he can’t help but put some thought into how remaking such a beloved film could work – if at all. “If they separate themselves from (the original) but still hold true to the human message behind the movie,” he reasoned. “I think that story could last forever.” Macchio also shared his thoughts with us on the casting of Jackie Chan, whether he’ll do a cameo, and the vocal outrage of sites like “Defamer” that have been vocal in criticizing the project. Stay tuned, as we’ll be posting those follow-ups soon. How do you feel about the thoughts of the original Daniel-san? Will there always be one “Karate Kid,” or are you willing to make room for another?

'Seven Pounds' scores overseas 'Slumdog Millionaire' jumps 50% in Britain Will Smith's "Seven Pounds" carried the most weight at the weekend's foreign box office with $19.8 million at 3,502 playdates in 25 markets. Awards season contender "Slumdog Millionaire" highlighted the frame as its British take jumped 50% to $3.6 million to lead in the U.K. "Seven Pounds" pulled in its top numbers from Spain with $4.2 million -- the best launch in nine months in that market -- and from its second Italian frame with $3.4 million, off 42%. It also posted second-place openings in France with $3 million, where it trailed the second weekend of "Twilight," and in the U.K. with $2.4 million. Sony's cumed $40.8 million from "Seven Pounds" in international markets while still early in its run to go along with $69 million domestically. Overall business stayed moderate in the wake of the end of the holidays and school vacations. In the same frame a year ago, Smith's "I Am Legend" led the international pack with $28.7 million. The "Pounds" victory ended a four-weekend winning streak by Paramount's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," which pulled in $8.3 million at 6,054 in 61 markets, pushing the toon's foreign cume to $380 million. Summit's "Twilight" put the bite on $13 million at 3,456 for a $135 million foreign total. Warner Bros. "Yes Man" continued to receive positive international response with $12 million at 3,200 in four dozen markets, led by a $2.7 million Russian launch, for $67 million cume. Fox's "Australia" remained a respectable player in foreign mulitplexes with $10.3 million at 4,750 in 56 markets, led by a $2.7 million launch in Italy. International support is helping to salvage Baz Luhrmann's epic with $118.5 million outside the United States -- $70 million higher than the disappointing domestic total. Fox also saw "Bride Wars" romance its way to $6.2 million at 1,100 in 16 markets, led by a No. 1 launch in Australia with $2.2 million, nearly double the opening of "Role Models." "Wars" also declined only 23% to $2 million in its second British frame. Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories" showed some life with $4.5 million at 3,400 in 25 markets, all from holdover business, to push the family comedy's foreign cume to $68 million. The weekend saw a smattering of launches and expansions among Oscar contenders, ahead of Thursday's nominations announcement. "Slumdog" opened in fourth in France with $1.4 million and Paramount's "Revolutionary Road" drove to $2.4 million at 513 in five openings, led by $1.4 million in Germany. "Doubt" generated a solid $675,000 at 110 in its first openings in five markets, led by $410,000 in Australia; "Milk" took in $280,000 at 118 in its second Spanish frame; "Frost/Nixon" grossed $210,000 at 117 in four markets for a $1.3 million cume. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111799873...yid=13&cs=1

Francis Lawrence reveals what he wants in an I Am Legend prequel Francis Lawrence, who directed 2007's I Am Legend, told SCI FI Wire that he, star Will Smith and writer/producer Akiva Goldsman are awaiting a script, by D.B. Weiss, for the proposed prequel film, which will again explore the idea of what it means to be the last man on Earth. "That was the real reason I wanted to do the movie in the first place, really, was the idea of 'What does that world look like, what does it do to you when you're by yourself?'" Lawrence said in an exclusive interview Thursday night in Universal City, Calif., where he was promoting his upcoming limited NBC series Kings. "What does it do without people, without companionship and sound and the loss of your family, without anybody to talk to? I think that's really what people connected to, and so the tough thing is, how do we do that again and in a different way?" The first film showcased Smith's performance as Robert Neville, the last human survivor of a virulent plague that has transformed the rest of humanity into ravening vampire-like creatures. The prequel would step back to a time before the events of the first movie, which was based on Richard Matheson's classic SF novel. The movie is reportedly envisioned as a prequel because Smith's character perishes in the first movie. "I have my beliefs on what was interesting about the first story and what was not so interesting about the first story, and I think that to go back, there has to be a truly viable reason to go back into that world that I think interested everybody, so that's the real struggle," Lawrence said. "The struggle is to find a story that brings us back in a way that's hopefully just as interesting as the first time around." Lawrence added: "Yeah, if we figure out the story, I'm absolutely involved in the prequel. ... We've had conversations. The three of us, Will and Akiva and I, have sat down and talked, and there's a writer that's working on it right now. So we came up with the bones of a story, and now we're waiting to see a script." Lawrence said there's no time frame for development of the project. "It's really just honestly about trying to come up with something really good," he said. "I think that's the bottom line for all of us: ... It's not a rush. It's 'Let's just try and make it good and make it right and do what we want to do.'" http://scifiwire.com/2009/01/francis-lawre...end-prequel.php

'Everybody and their mama is doing a documentary on Obama,' director tells MTV News at Sundance. The combination of Barack Obama, Will Smith and Spike Lee sounds like a winning ticket on any ballot, be it at the box office or beyond. But according to the noted Brooklyn filmmaker — despite Obama's comments about his and Smith's similar ears and the Fresh Prince's own lobbying to play the president-elect — a movie involving all three would never happen. "Not doing it," Lee told MTV News on Friday (January 16) during the Sundance Film Festival. "Everybody and their mama is doing a documentary on Obama." The "Do the Right Thing" director also added that he's not interested in doing a project on Vice President-elect Joseph Biden either. "It's not an interest for me," he said. "I'd love to see them, but it's not something that I want to do." Besides, Lee noted, Smith doesn't actually want to portray Barack Obama in a movie — he actually wants to be the president of the United States. "Will wasn't joking," Lee said, laughing. In past interviews, Smith has often explained that if he sets his mind on something, he truly believes he can achieve it. "Obama beat him to the punch," Lee said. "They'll still let him run, though, if he wants. You gotta speak to Will, I guess. I can't speak for him." Lee is set to host a symposium on Monday at Howard University centered on the inauguration of America's first black president. http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1602977/story.jhtml

Video! Will Smith Vows to Play Obama as US President http://streetknowledge.wordpress.com/2009/...s-us-president/ Smith has staked his claim to play the role, even before Barack Obama has been inaugurated as president. Speaking at the premiere of his new film Seven Pounds at the Empire, Leicester Square, in London, Smith laughed about reports that the US President-elect had indicated that he would like the actor to play him if his life story were ever to be made into a movie. “If I am ordered by my commander in chief to star in a film about him, I will do my duty as an American,” he said, beaming. Smith, best known for the Men in Black films and Independence Day, says however that he had no desire to move into the White House for real. “If we were in the White House I don’t know if that would exactly be a good thing. The Obamas are much more prepared to be in the White House than the Smiths. “It’s a whole lot more fun to be a movie star. That’s a difficult job being President with a whole lot of lives on the line with every decision you make. In my job I just bring joy. I don’t bring bad news. I think I’ll stay in my position for quite some time.” Smith said the “world had changed forever” with the election of Barack Obama. He said he would be an “eyewitness to history” when he attends the impending inauguration of US President-elect Barack Obama. Seven Pounds charts Smith’s character Ben Thomas’s attempts at redemption following a horrific accident. It also stars Rosario Dawson. The actor added that he also has plans to do a Bollywood film with Danny Boyle following the success of Slumdog Millionaire. He said: “I talked to Danny Boyle just a couple of weeks ago. When we find something it will be fantastic. I’m trying to expand as an actor and as an artist to bring stories to the screen that add to people’s lives that work in service to humanity.”

Will Smith: 'Jaden is a natural' Will Smith has revealed that he always knew son Jaden would make it as an actor. The Seven Pounds star said that his son, who appeared alongside him in 2006 drama The Pursuit of Happyness, is a natural in front of the camera. "He just naturally has a joy, a love, for people and for emotion so it's the perfect combination to be an actor. He is so inspired to do it," he is quoted as saying. "It worked, somehow. Jaden, he understands emotion, he's really sensitive. The business is a little scary for me with him." Jaden, ten, is Smith's only son with second wife Jada Pinkett Smith. The couple also have daughter Willow, eight. Jaden will play the lead in the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/showbiz/a14280...atural.html?rss
