Aceyalone, Zion-I Compete For MTV Exposure By Clover Hope Date: 11/9/2004 6:55 pm Hip-Hop underground acts Aceyalone, a founding member of Freestyle Fellowship, and the spiritual Hip-Hop trio Zion-I will compete in "MTV2's Dew Circuit Breakout," amongst 12 unknown bands battling in a weeklong tournament to gain valuable exposure. Zion-I will appear on "MTV2's Dew Circuit Breakout," November 22 and Aceyalone on November 24, with MTV2 VJ Jim Shearer hosting in-depth interviews and performances. The winners of the semi-finalist rounds advance to the final competition December 4, when each band will perform a song from their current album before a live audience at MTV2's Times Square Studios. The winner, voted on by viewers, receives $50,000, a weeklong appearance on "MTV2 Rock" and their own "Bands A to Z" page on MTV.com. Aceyalone contributed to the evolution of literary Hip-Hop on the West Coast at a time when gangsta rap was prominent. After the Freestyle Fellowship disbanded, the Bay Area artist launched his solo career and remained venerated in West Coast underground Hip-Hop. Zion-I, consisting of Oakland's MC Zion and DJ/Producer Amp Live, made their mark in the Bay Area by merging Hip-Hop and spiritualism, with unity and spiritual awareness as the central message in their rhymes. The trio opened for rap pioneers like Run-D.M.C, Rakim and De La Soul following several indie hits. Aceyalone's All Balls Don't Bounce Revisited was released earlier this year on Decon as an updated version of his debut album, and Zion-I's latest album Curb Servin' was released in 2003 under Raptivism. The 24-hour MTV2 music network provides a platform for breaking artists, new music and underground Hip-Hop.

i think they planned to release it during january to avoid all the nov/dec competition... it will be billed as a "will smith" album but will have jazzy jeff and fresh prince tracks on it

i think its more likely to come out in january..instead of being lostin christmas.. lets all have our fingers crossed that interscope gives will a solid release date for the album.. ive known plenty of albums to be delayed/never come out on interscope

Rapper Jin: Headlines Over Shooting ’Frustrating’ Saturday, November 20, 2004 By Alona Wartofsky Special to The Washington Post NEW YORK — Last November, rapper Jin was with friends at Yello, a Chinatown nightclub, when an argument broke out. One of Jin’s close friends, rapper Christopher “L.S.” Louie, was shot in the back. Police have named a suspect in the shooting — reportedly an aspiring rapper — but no arrests have been made. While Jin was lucky to escape without injury, he says the headlines were “frustrating.” “Asian rap war leads to shoot- ing in Chinatown,” he intones. “Sounds like a good story, right? And that’s exactly why they called it that. ... But the only accurate thing about all of that is probably Asian, that’s it. Gang wars? No. Rap wars? No. It had nothing to do with any of that. ... The magazines, newspaper ... they were exploiting it.” He adds: “These guys that were there that were involved in the shooting, I didn’t know them ... All their motive was, like, ’Yo, that’s Jin and I don’t like him, so I’m gonna try to threaten him, I’m gonna pull a gun at him, I’m gonna try to rob him.’ ” “But of course if (the media) just wrote it like that, it wouldn’t be exciting,” he says. For rappers, those kinds of headlines can boost album sales. Several of Jin’s fellow Ruff Ryders have enjoyed the notoriety that accompanies repeated run-ins with the law, but he insists thugging isn’t really his style. “That’s not the type of mystique I want,” he says. Jin, who made his big-screen debut as an auto mechanic in the street-racing movie ”2 Fast 2 Furious,” hopes to emulate a different kind of hip-hop icon. “I wanna be like Will Smith,” he says. “Just an overall, well-respected entrepreneur. He’s a family man, you know what I’m sayin’?”
