  2. Fox Planning Back-to-Back Independence Day Sequels, With or Without a Pricey Will Smith After fifteen years of movie destruction, director Roland Emmerich and his old producing and screenwriting partner Dean Devlin are now putting the finishing touches on back-to-back sequel scripts to 1996's Independence Day, the $800 million worldwide hit that first taught them the importance of blowing major landmarks to hell. But whether Will Smith will be back to to welcome more aliens to Earth as Captain Stephen Hiller is still a question mark: Fox started working on structuring a deal to sign him back in early 2009, but the world's last bankable action star was seeking $50 million to shoot both ID2 and ID3 back-to-back, and Fox balked at so large a price tag in combination with Emmerich’s own hefty salary demands to direct. “The delay wasn’t about whether they both wanted to make the movie,” explains one insider, “It had more to do with ‘Whose dick is bigger?’" Nothing has been yet settled, because almost a year ago all concerned parties elected to retreat and focus instead on first getting the scripts right; they're expected to be delivered to Fox by early to mid-December of this year at the latest. Insiders tell us that Fox is willing to make the movies without Smith, if necessary, but he is what helps make the films a sure thing: Can the stuck-in-neutral movie business, let alone Fox, afford to lose him? Little is known about the two ID sequels, other than that they will tell a single story, but will be engineered more in the Back to the Future Parts 2 and 3 sequential-but-not-imperative model than like the last two Harry Potters, which was essentially one movie split in two. As our insider puts it, “They’re intended to be fulfilling movies onto themselves — you could see each separately and enjoy them — but they tell one big story.” The fact that they will be shot back-to-back is especially appealing to Smith, who's sought to spend more time with his family in recent years. Fox is wary of the kind of hard-line, high-priced negotiations that Smith engaged in with Sony in 2002 before committing to Men in Black II, a film that ended up being a payday in search of a movie. And clearly Men in Black III looms large in their minds; its pricey shoot dragged on after script problems quickly became production problems. But on the other hand, with box office stagnating, Hollywood desperately needs Smith, its only remaining take-it-to-the-bank action star, back making blockbusters again. (His last film was 2008's weepy Seven Pounds.) Total box office has been essentially running in place, buoyed largely by 3-D ticket price increases rather than admissions, which have been down in recent years: In 2010, total attendance was down 5.36 percent from 2009. And year to date, box-office revenue is down about 4.4 percent compared with the same point last year. This period also corresponds with Smith's extended hiatus from moviemaking; the actor has been focusing more on his family life and assisting his kids' efforts to in break into the movie business. (Smith is developing a remake of Annie for his daughter, Willow, and producing a sequel to The Karate Kid for his son, Jaden.) Usually, Smith shoots two movies a year. But in the last three years, he’s made only one film — Men in Black III — which won’t arrive in theaters until next year. As a result, Hollywood has been shorted about five Will Smith movies in the last three years. Run the numbers, and one quickly sees just how much box office Hollywood is missing out on: From 2005 to 2008, Will Smith starred in five films, grossing, in total, a little over $2 billion worldwide. This is not to say that a few four-quadrant Smith films can jump-start the entire industry, but him getting back in the game can only help things. While Smith hasn't committed to the ID sequels, Fox can take comfort in the fact that Smith does not have a next picture completely locked. While it’s been announced that Smith is attached (with his son, Jaden) to star in the M. Night Shyamalan film One Thousand A.E. at Sony Pictures, studio insiders tell Vulture that the studio is going extra-slow on preproduction, marking time to avoid any repeats of its hellish MIB3 shoot and doing everything it can to lock down its story line. “It’s complicated because of where and how [smith] wants to shoot; he wants to be close to home, to the kids," explains our spy, adding, "There’s also been talks about him wanting to include Jada and maybe even Willow in the movie, too. [sony] just managed to get through the mire that was Men in Black 3, and so they’re just trying to avoid anything remotely similar. They want the story straight, and want Will to sign off on it, totally, before they proceed.” http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/10/independence_day_sequel_will_s.html

  5. Roland Emmerich: Will Smith may return in possible ‘Independence Day’ sequel A sequel to "Independence Day" might be one small step closer to reality. Roland Emmerich spoke to The Lantern on Monday, and said a script for a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster, which he directed, is being written and attempts to round up members of the original cast are being made. Emmerich said he's trying to get the cast of the first film on board with the sequel, including Will Smith. "We've talked to him, but naturally he wants to see a script, which I totally understand," Emmerich said. Emmerich did not have an immediate time frame for when the script would be completed or when production would begin. "I'd say hold tight," he said. "It's happening soon." Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin, who also wrote the original film, originally planned to revisit "Independence Day" after seeing reaction to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. However, plans were scrapped until 2009, when Emmerich told latinoreview.com that he had a good story off of which to go. On June 24, 2011, Devlin told collider.net that there was a concept in place for a sequel and two sequels are a possibility. Requests for comment from Smith's publicist and 20th Century Fox, the studio that owns the rights to the original film, were not immediately returned. "Independence Day" originally hit theaters July 2, 1996. The film stars Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, who team up in an attempt to save the planet from an alien invasion. The film made more than $816 million in worldwide box office. http://www.thelantern.com/a-e/roland-emmerich-will-smith-may-return-in-possible-independence-day-sequel-1.2663365#.TqgTqnJLOAg

  10. NYCC 2011: Kotobukiya Announces Street Fighter & Men In Black Bishoujos Sometimes, the best news seems to slip right under the radar–this was definitely the case at Kotobukiya’s booth this year! The best announcements were hidden away in their pamphlet, in tiny little boxes next to an image of the finished Liara. So, what are these amazing announcements? Well, we have two new franchises joining the Bishoujo line! First off is the new Game Bishoujo addition, Street Fighter! Two characters were announced, Cammy and Chun-Li, and of course they will be in 1/7 scale like all of the new Bishoujos. These two girls certainly won’t be the only ones, and several more releases are hinted at! Second is a pretty awesome addition to the Movie Bishoujo line, Men In Black 3! Like the Ghostbuster Lucy, this will be an original character–a female agent of the MIB! I’m pretty excited to get a Bishoujo in a suit, and I can’t wait to see what Shunya Yama****a does for both of these new lines. Hit the jump to check out the text from the official announcements! Men In Black 3 Coming Summer 2012: a new Men In Black agent joins Kotobukiya’s Bishoujo, or beautiful girls, series of statues featuring heroes and villains from your favorite comics and movies. She may work for a highly funded yet unofficial government agency, but it would take more than a shot from the neural neutralizer to forget this MIB agent. Based on an illustration by master illustrator Shunya Yama****a, images and statistics on this agent are highly classified. http://www.plastikit...black-bishoujos
  11. You’ll Get to Be an Alphabet Agent in the New Men in Black Video Game Announced earlier this week, Activision's in-development Men in Black video game will be tying into the sci-fi film franchise's currently filming threequel. The trailer that's running on the floor of 2011 New York Comic-Con reveals that the game's a third-person shooter where you'll apparently be playing as a rookie alphabetically-named agent. You'll be hunting down the xenoforms that live amongst us and mind-wiping any civilians who see what the MIB do while doing their duty. Look to become a black-suited secret agent when the Men in Black game hits next May. VIDEO http://kotaku.com/58...lack-video-game
  12. I didn't know it was cancelled after Season 4 either, but it would make perfect sense since Will is returning to Philly. Luckily we enjoyed two seasons more!

  17. Men In Black Video Game Arriving In 2012 Activision announced that they're working with Columbia Pictures to create a new Men in Black video game. The standalone game will arrive in Spring 2012, around the same time that Men in Black III hits theaters. "The Men In Black franchise is an unbeatable starting point to deliver a genre-bending gaming experience with a level of production value on par with Hollywood," said David Oxford, Executive Vice President of Activision Publishing. According to the press release, the MIB video game will share the film's "unique blend of action, humor, and special effects." Presumably you'll be shooting lots of aliens. Pretty common behavior for a gamer. Activision is planning both console and handheld versions. Additional details on gameplay features will be released soon. The game has an original story that builds on the history of the series. You'll see a mixture of new and old faces. Wonder whether they'll get Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones to contribute. "With Activision bringing the Men In Black universe to life on next gen consoles for the first time, the Men In Black video game will be both familiar to fans, an exciting beginning for the uninitiated, and revolutionary for the franchise," said Mark Caplan, vice president of licensing for Sony Pictures Entertainment. There has only been one MIB video game released in the franchise's history. Men in Black II: Alien Escape, based partly on the second film, tasked players with hunting down violent aliens that escaped from a prison ship. Considering how much money the MIB films brought in, it's a bit surprising there haven't been more games. A movie about two dudes shooting aliens seems like an ideal candidate for a video game cross-over. http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Men-Black-Video-Game-Arriving-2012-35993.html

  19. Will Smith Reunites With DJ Jazzy Jeff & Records New Music Will Smith’s longtime collaborator says The Fresh Prince never wanted to leave rap alone… Plans for a Will Smith comeback album have yet to be solidified, but XXLMag.com has learned that the Oscar-nominated-rapper-turned-actor has logged in studio time with his longtime friend and collaborator, DJ Jazzy Jeff. “He came down like two weeks ago and was like, ‘Yo, I wanna get back into the studio, and we just knocked out some stuff,” Jeff told XXL. “I just think more than anything there is no set pattern, no set plan, but we just wanna go into the studio and see what we come out with. If I can get it back to the way we used to make music, you know, it used to be just me and him in the room. You don’t need no entourages and cameras and all of that and see what happens. He hasn’t decided exactly what he wants to do.” Though Smith hasn’t released music since 2005′s Lost & Found, Jeff assures that the Fresh Prince still has hip-hop in mind. “Will has never not wanted to do music,” Jeff shared. “When you’re pretty much the biggest movie star in the world, the movie people don’t want you to do music ’cause you ain’t making $50 million off of making music. From a financial perspective, movies is where it’s at. And it’s not like his heart is not in the movies, but he’s always wanted to do some level of music.”—Carl Chery http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2011/10/will-smith-reunites-with-dj-jazzy-jeff-records-new-music/

  21. It’s time to say R.I.P. to three recording imprints that were homes to some of hip hop’s most popular and widely acclaimed artists. In an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter” yesterday (Oct. 7), president and Chief Operations Officer of RCA Music Group Tom Corson revealed that Jive Records, Arista Records and J Records—three of the label group’s monikers—will be absorbed into its fourth, RCA Records. Coincidentally, RCA Records is the flagship label of Sony Music Entertainment, which distributes the labels under the RCA Music Group umbrella. Thus, RCA Records is now solely responsible for releasing all RCA Music Group products. Corson cites a revamping of the RCA brand and focus on a leaner yet profitable financial model as the reasons for shuttering Jive, Arista and J. “We've learned to work with less and hopefully accomplish the same or more,” said Carson. “The path we've taken is to refresh RCA, so we're going to retire those brands.” Founded in 1977, Jive may have made its biggest splash with the teenybopper explosion of the late-‘90s to the early 2000s with acts such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. However, Jive was also home to some of the rap genre’s best known acts of the ‘80s and ‘90s, which included Boogie Down Productions and KRS-One, Too $hort, and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Arista, which music industry stalwart Clive Davis founded in 1974, is the oldest of the three imprints, once a stable for rap/hip hop acts such as Naughty by Nature, Cee-Lo Green and A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip. Bad Boy Records and So So Def Recordings—founded by moguls Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jermaine Dupri, respectively—are just two of the several hip hop labels that once relied on Arista for distributing its records. Davis also founded J Records—in 2001, making it the youngest of the three ill-fated brands. Not exactly a hotbed for rap artists, it has nevertheless opened its arms to acts such as Pitbull. By default, the artists signed to the now-defunct labels have now moved to RCA. In addition to Pitbull, hip hop and R&B acts involved in the automatic migration include Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, T-Pain and Usher. http://www.examiner.com/hip-hop-music-in-baltimore/no-more-jive-arista-and-j-records
