1. Big-eared Will Smith goes on charm offensive September 15, 2004 By Tanya Farber A philosopher, a flirt and above all, a comedian. That's how the charming, pixie-faced Will Smith came across at the Palazzo Hotel in Montecasino, Johannesburg, last night, when he addressed a room full of journalists as part of his promotion of I, Robot, which opens here on Friday. He burst into the room with a plate of food, a gigantic smile and a raucous cheer for all those around him. Asked if he ever looked in the mirror and had a strange moment of disbelief where he said to the reflection of the megastar in front of him, "I am Will Smith", he came out with a response that filled the room with hilarity. "No," he confessed, "I look in the mirror and say, 'You would be so much more famous if your ears weren't so big', and sometimes, I look in the mirror and say, 'Do you have any idea how much money you would make if you looked like Brad Pitt?" When another journalist, who before asking his question confessed that he had not yet seen the movie, Smith pretended to be furious and walk off in disgust. At a later stage, when he was told by a woman in the group that she "had not thought of him as a sex symbol until she saw I, Robot", he jumped out of his seat once again and made his way over to her. Flexing the muscles of his upper arm, he allowed her to have a squeeze and then said: "Now tell me I am not a sex symbol." When the discussion turned more serious about the part he could play as a role model for black youngster, he began waxing lyrical in a philosophical tone, but then lightened the mood once again by saying: "I like saving the world in my movies. Nobody can name another black guy who's ever saved the world!" And, on his role as Muhammad Ali in the biopic Ali, he said: "Playing Ali gave me the opportunity to define certain intangibles like greatness. So, it was a bittersweet opportunity to understand what greatness is but to know that I am not great. "I was like, 'Wow, I get to play Ali', and then the movie was over and it was like, 'Damn, I am just Will'." Still on the topic of past and present roles he has had in movies, he joked around that "when you get to kiss someone in a movie, it's like legal cheating", and when asked who he would choose if he could be cast alongside any other film star, deceased or alive, he replied: "If it's an adult movie, I would like it to be Halle Berry." He then added: "Seriously, though, I think I would choose Sidney Poitier. I mean, how does that guy stay so calm?" With that, he did an impersonation of the great actor, and again had the room in fits of laughter.

 3. Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio have joined forces to star in a special new documentary about a tragic 11-year-old wannabe actor. Dustin Moraz, who was just 11 when he died of a terminal illness, spent much of his short life trying to become an actor and befriended many stars along the way. His final wish was for filmmaker Giselle Fernandez to tell his story in a new TV film, to encourage more stars to boost he morale of Los Angeles' sick kids. In the film, Moraz is shown receiving his Screen Actors Guild card at a special ceremony surrounded by Smith and DiCaprio. Smith says: "I have three children so I can only imagine the pain and difficulty the family has had." DiCaprio adds: "He has such tremendous courage and I don't think that I would be able to have half the courage that this young man has." The movie, Our Story, also follows generous stars like Lopez as she spends time with sick kids from Los Angeles' Children's Hospital. Meanwhile, Lopez will be honoured for the time she has dedicated to kids from the hospital at a gala next month.

 7. Mandela appoints Will Smith as global AIDS ambassador JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Former South African president Nelson Mandela reportedly appointed Hollywood actor and rap star Will Smith as a global ambassador for his 46664 AIDS (news - web sites) awareness campaign. AFP Photo Smith is in the country with his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith and their two children to promote his new science-fiction movie I, Robot. "We are pleased to announce that Will Smith has been appointed as our global ambassador," Mandela told a meeting in Johannesburg according to SABC television news. "I am honoured and will humbly and aggressively respond," responded Smith, who said he fell under the spell of the 86-year-old statesman during a previous visit. "The last time I was here, I met Nelson Mandela. I got fired up and felt like I could quit my job," Smith was quoted as saying by the local media. "He made me understand the power I have as an actor. He said the platform I have in film is extremely powerful and that I should use it to influence people," said Smith, who with Mandela sported black T-shirts with the "46664" logo -- the elderly statesman's prison number under apartheid. The number had now become synonymous with Mandela's AIDS awareness campaign, supported by numerous artists and celebrities including rock stars Bono and Bob Geldoff.

 12. Jolie Good Show At Shark Tale Premiere Animated underwater movie Shark Tale has had its premiere in historic St Mark's Square, Venice. An audience of 6,000 watched the film on a 100ft inflatable screen, during the Venice Film Festival. Among them were its stars Will Smith, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro who walked down the red carpet with the Basilica di San Marco as their backdrop. It was the first time such an event had been held in the Square, Venice's most famous landmark. "This is one to remember forever," said Smith. "This is up there with the No 1 premiere of all time. It doesn't get much better than this." De Niro was equally impressed: "This is great. It's just amazing." Jolie said: "It's absolutely beautiful and I'm just thrilled to be here. It really doesn't compare to any premiere or award ceremony there has been before." The animated underwater movie is a cross between Finding Nemo and The Godfather. Smith supplies the voice for Oscar, a fast-talking fish who lands himself in hot water when he pretends to have slayed a great white shark. De Niro sends up his role in The Godfather, playing shark boss Don Lino, with director Martin Scorsese as his puffer fish sidekick and comic Jack Black as his effeminate son. Jolie is Lola, the femme fatale of the fish world who sets her sights on Oscar when his supposedly heroic feat turns him into a celebrity.

 15. I guess Will Smith is a little tired of the big action movie cause his upcoming movie is a romantic comedy. It's his first step into this genre and from the trailer, it looks like it's pretty much Big Willy doing what he does best. The movie was called LAST FIRST KISS at some point but now it looks like it's called HITCH, after Will Smith's character's name. In it, Smith stars as a dating expert who helps a bumbling Kevin James (from King of Queens) out with women. It also co-stars the scrumptious Eva Mendez. Check it out HERE n the sophisticated romantic comedy LAST FIRST KISS, Will Smith stars as Alex “Hitch” Hitchens. Eva Mendes co-stars as Sara, a gossip reporter for a daily tabloid who, after a chance meeting with Hitch, finds her professional life and personal life on a collision course. She makes Hitch re-evaluate his game and teaches him that love is not a feeling, it’s an action. 20. Sept. 10, 2004 — When the zombies attack, they don't care if you're wearing a miniskirt, and even a Calvin Klein model-turned-action-hero isn't going to bring them back to life. Milla Jovovich returns in a sequel to 2002's video game-inspired Resident Evil. In Resident Evil: Apocalypse, opening today, her character has been genetically enhanced with superstrong fighting skills, which the former model is definitely going to need. "I'm a warrior, I love martial arts," says Jovovich with a tongue-in-cheek nod to the campy elements of the sequel. "I love to feel powerful in that sense," she says with a laugh during an interview to promote the film. "I definitely have a talent with violent objects. Maybe it's my Yugoslavian background. I'm always ready for battle — it's that crazy barbarian thing coming back from the abyss of my DNA." The 28-year-old Jovovich, who has graced the cover of more than 150 magazines, wasn't kidding around when it came to preparing to be an action hero. Her four-month training regiment included stick fighting and weapons instruction under Phil Spangengerger, who counts Mel Gibson and Will Smith among his students.

 23. Getting a movie made is never easy, even in the best of circumstances. So consider what it was like for black director Melvin van Peebles when he was trying to attract backing for his breakthrough drama "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" in 1970. "Hollywood liked to show us clowning, but America wasn't in a laughing mood -- especially black America," notes Melvin, as he reflects back on his childhood, in which he regularly watched now-cringe-worthy portrayals of black men as shuffling servants, lazy slaves or witch doctors. Van Peebles' pitch: "A street brother turns revolutionary -- and gets away with it." His concept: Put "all the faces Norman Rockwell never painted" on the screen in down-and-dirty detail, with plenty of violence, sex and authentic inner-city flavor. From Our Advertiser Peddling this idea to the cinematic establishment in a period in which the major studios were pouring millions into soon-to-bomb megamusicals like "Song of Norway" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" qualifies as either completely crazy or amazingly brave. Either way, it makes for an entertaining behind-the-scenes tale in "Baadasssss," directed by Melvin's son, Mario, who also played a key role in the making of "Sweetback." Mario co-wrote the screenplay of "Baadasssss," which was in turn based on Melvin's autobiography. In a twist that should delight any psychoanalysts in the audience, Mario plays his father in the film, too. The combination of these two perspectives (separated by that old '70s bugaboo, the generation gap) helps "Baadasssss" to score both as an atmospheric, often funny look at the wild world of independent moviemaking and as a surprisingly touching story of father/son bonding. Melvin originally insists that Mario refer to him by his first name instead of calling him "Dad," but by the time the two have survived the filming and grueling post-production of "Sweetback" -- a period that involved battles with the Screen Actors Guild, brushes with unsavory money-men, visits to psychedelic orgies and lots of hectic hustling to keep the project alive -- their relationship has changed significantly. No wonder the proudly profane "Baadasssss" is subtitled "A Love Story": It's certainly about one man's passion to get across what he sees as a vital message, but it's also an examination of how tough times can either shatter a family or bond the members into an invincible little army. The Van Peebles' story is told with flair and, one suspects, a bit of playful exaggeration that enhances the comedy. The excellent cast includes Nia Long as Melvin's incredibly tolerant lover, Joy Bryant as Melvin's starry-eyed secretary, David Alan Grier as a debonair producer of smut films and Khleo Thomas as the young Mario. "Baadasssss" also offers a few valuable insights into how the entertainment world has changed over the last three decades. Today, when the names of Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Halle Berry and Denzel Washington always seem to be on a marquee somewhere, it's difficult to imagine a time when producers couldn't picture white audiences turning out for a movie with a black star other than Sidney Poitier. It's equally startling to consider that even if those films got made they might wind up, as "Sweetback" did, in the hands of some low-rent distributor that traditionally marketed things like "Pregnant Teenage Mom" ("the story your parents won't tell you," according to its poster). The surprise success of "Sweetback" changed not only the face of independent film, but also the mindset of the motion picture industry, which gleefully launched a barrage of "blaxploitation" movies that retained the violence and sexual content of "Sweetback," but generally threw out the black-power message Melvin had fought so fervently to hold on to. The dilution has continued over the years, and it would be fascinating to hear Melvin's thoughts on the rash of "urban comedies" -- including the recently released "The Cookout" -- that essentially recycle those ancient stereotypes he despised as a kid and pretend they are no longer as offensive as they really are. There's a sad coda to the "Sweetback" saga, and unfortunately it's playing at a theater near you.
