Doug E. Fresh Owes Over $2 Million in Unpaid Taxes

By The Editors of Boombox Posted Dec 8th 2010 11:40AM
Hip-Hop pioneer Doug E. Fresh is in trouble with the IRS for apparently failing to pay over $2 million in taxes.

According the Detroit News, the beatboxer owes $2,276,848 million in taxes and, in an attempt to collect on the hefty bill, the IRS filed a lien against Fresh with the New York City register's office in October.

Fresh, born Douglas E. Davis, has been in tax trouble before. In 2008, he was sought for $367,000 in delinquent tax payments. Yet despite his financial issues, the 44-year-old has delved into other business ventures outside the music industry, opening a restaurant in Harlem last month.

The eatery, Doug E's, was met with criticism after its opening was delayed by two years. Doug E's, located in Harlem, specializes in a variety of fast food options, including waffles and fried chicken.

As the founding member of the Get Fresh Crew, Fresh gained his footing in the New York music scene in the early 1980s. After linking with rapper Slick Rick to release the hit 'La Di Da Di' in 1985, Fresh rose to popularity for his beatboxing skills, which later solidified his place in hip-hop history. I don't know...but a lot of artists and actors get in trouble for this. There's gotta be something like not having the right people looking over your finances for you for this to happen to so many artists.

It goes beyond Hip-Hop. I've read many articles over the years and it seems to be an ongoing problems. I think it ultimately comes down to 2 things. They make a lot of money which gives them crazy taxes and/or they hire people to overlook too many parts of their business and they go unaware when someone isn't doing their job.
