  1. You can take the fame Hommie, just give the mic back After you spit your optional verse Because they might clap I like that. He's been practicing. The beat is sick; it's definitely an old school Mos Defish/Blackstar/underground type joint. As for the lyrics... there is only so much a 13 year old can rhyme about. If he keeps working on the craft, when he's older, he's going to be pretty good.
  2. On the internet, especially twitter, people were really ragging about the fact that there was going to be an MIB 3. The internet was also abuzz about the Karate Kid movie...This is pretty standard.
  3. It's true. Many people voted for Obama because he is black. It's simple to explain. When every US President and Vice President in the 219 year history of the country has been white, it's much easier to get excited and motivated about the political system when a politician reflects your skin color in addition to your ideals. Incidentally, it's also a fact that many voted for McCain because Obama is black. But if we're talking about race... Close to 85% of black people who voted in 1992 and 1996 voted for Bill Clinton. 90% of black people who voted in 2000 voted for Al Gore... 88% of black people who voted in 2004 voted for John Kerry. As I'm sure you know, all of those candidates were white. Prior to Barack Obama's strong showing in Iowa during the Democratic primaries, the vast majority of black people supported Hilary Clinton and didn't think Obama could win. Should I also mention the paltry support that Al Sharpton got from the black community when he ran for President in 2003-2004? Race is a factor, but it is neither the big or deciding factor some have hoped to make the 2008 election out to be.
  4. This is interesting. You hear someone say that the opportunities that America provides has allowed him to be where he is and you consider that aggrandizing. Rather, it comes off as someone who is profoundly grateful for what they have managed to achieve. An American celebrity is no different than any other American in that their beliefs and their experiences shape their political views. The only difference is that they have a platform from which to spout those views. In this interview, it seems that they were asked questions by the press or whomever was in attendance. Disagree with what he believes, but be careful to make sure you're not the one who comes off sounding uninformed. You're teetering on the precipice right now.
  5. I'm sure that one of the many reasons Will Smith supports Barack Obama is because he is black. Given the history of our nation and the skin tone of our previous 43 Presidents, it's entirely understandable that a black man would become excited when another person of color ascends to the highest office in the land. Condoleezza Rice and a number of other staunch African American conservatives, though they did not support him, were quite happy and overwhelmed when Obama won in 2008 as well. However, I suspect that Will doesn't support Obama only because of his race, otherwise we would have seen him as an active supporter of Al Sharpton and other politicians of African descent in the past. For instance, it is highly unlikely that Will would ever support Allan West or Allan Keys who are black. Why? Because policy and temperament also appear to be a factor for will. Therefore, saying "Oh wait, he's black...that's why" is extremely myopic and a little foolish. First, it's important to note in this statement that he praises America and the opportunities it affords... not Barack Obama. It wasn't Barack Obama that allowed Will Smith to attain the status that he now has and he seems to understand that, so it's clear that he's not some shill looking to advance some black agenda. He gives full credit to the nation for what it has allowed him to do and become. It's ironic to hear a black man praising this country and being criticized for it... again, given this nation's history in terms of race relations. Secondly, how many world famous black rappers/actors are there in China? Indonesia? Mexico? Russia? Argentina? Will is technically correct; no other country in the world would have likely given him the opportunity to do and become what he is now. We know his history... it's plain that America has given him a unique opportunity. ...and even if we want to argue that this comment is an overstatement, we've heard countless Presidents and other high ranking officials of this country (most of whom were not black or Democrats) make the exact same statement. So are you really annoyed by the fact that he is trumpeting an idea a number of Republicans have stressed for decades? I hope not. I'm in full agreement that we need to spend our tax dollars more efficiently and that we should be proactive in solving these issues, but it is also abundantly clear that giving people like Will Smith a tax cut is not the way to eliminate our deficit and pay down our debt. We need to keep taxes at a reasonable rate, eliminate loop holes and get rid of expensive, inefficient programs. Fixing our ills requires a multifaceted approach. It doesn't make sense for you to whine when a celebrity (who you obviously dislike) believes that he should pay more of his ill-gotten money in taxes. ...and you mentioned the health care mandate. I don't want to go too far off topic with this, but since you brought it up... I'm sure you know that the mandate was a Republican sponsored idea in the mid 90s. Yes, they were for it before they were against it. Our Republican nominee for President fully supports health care mandates as well... so much so that he established one in Massachusetts when he was Governor of the state. The mandate was an extension of the Republican philosophy of personal responsibility... the idea that if you had the ability to buy health insurance, you should, otherwise you pass on the cost of your healthcare to others who are actually responsible and pay for health care insurance. President Obama did not support the healthcare mandate initially. He preferred a non-profit healthcare system that managed cost and had low overhead. The reason this was unpalatable to so many was because there was no other way to create something like that other than to do so through the US government. But here is the root of the problem... why are companies, who are charged with providing for the healthcare and welfare of their customers looking to profit from those customers. Car insurance... home insurance... it's easy to understand why those are for-profit industries, but why is healthcare insurance still a for-profit industry? It's a huge conflict of interest when a company is beholden to it's shareholders while at the same time paying for the healthcare of millions. It stands to reason that one group will, at times, have to be placed over the other. We see that now when people can't get insurance because of pre-existing conditions or when they lose their insurance coverage due to getting too sick or requiring too much care. Health insurance accounts for 1/6th of the US economy, but I hear more complaints from people about the law than legitimate explanations as to how it negatively affects them and what the alternatives are. So I'm asking you... How does the health care law negatively affect you? If you're going to complain about it, back it up with something substantive. Lastly... this is not the kind of forum where we'll allow you to skate by on any and all manner of foolishness you think to type. If you can't support the things that you say, we won't have to ban you... you'll leave because you were so thoroughly embarrassed by one of us that it wasn't worth staying.
  6. If anyone is thinking about banning anyone, don't... please... :-) Once I find a little time, this is going to be fun...
  7. Now Willow is the star, how weak is that Pink hair, high socks, can't compete with that Lol! Best line... It's refreshing to see him having a little fun. In the past, he has looked overly serious. Have fun, Jaden... have fun.
  8. She has a great voice and she looks like she's just having fun.
  9. We have to take into account that a number of pretty big movies have come out and are coming out this summer. If the original MIB came out in the same summer that Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider Man, Prometheus, G.I. Joe Retaliation, the Bourne Legacy, The Expendables 2 and Total Recall came out, it would not have been as big and would not have had as many viewers. Had MIIIB not had summer competition from those other movies, first, it would have been released during the July 4th holiday season, which is big for summer movies, and not in May when kids are still in school and a month before summer even ends. Second, more people would have gone to see it because it would be the lone or one of the few true summer blockbusters to see. $577M and the number of people who went to see it is very good considering the number of other big movies that are coming out this summer. Avengers and TDKR have practically sucked up most of the air in the room, and in a tough economy, some people actually have to make a choice as to which movies they will be able to see and bring their kids to see this summer. We can't fairly compare MIB3 to MIB given the movie atmosphere this summer. This is the best summer blockbuster season ever with 4 huge movies (Avengers, MIB 3, Spiderman, Dark Knight) and some pretty serious action/adventure movies sprinkled in. We should be mindful of that when looking at these numbers.
  10. Likely because they are his children and in an attempt to be a good father, he is trying be there to watch over them and be a guide and example for them as they take on these projects. So many of the other Hollywood kids are exposed to the industry and left by their parents in the care of others or to largely fend for themselves. We have numerous examples of many of these kids turn out and I'm sure Will and Jada, while wanting to support the budding careers of their kids, are well aware of the pitfalls that are prevalent. I can't fault them for doing a good deal of hand holding as their careers develop.
  11. So.... It has surpassed the $150M barrier. Can we call it a success now, or should we extend that barrier from $150M to $175M so that we can continue to call it a mild flop?
  12. Half a billion dollars is pretty good. The quality of the movie and the amount it has made have made it a veritable success.
  13. From everything I've heard, Jaden seems like an absolute joy to work with.
  14. I seem to remember saying something like this would happen. ahem i do believe i also said this lol. No-one believed me about the weather but im telling you in the UK it was dead the opening week when it was sunny and packed the second week when it rained. It may not make a difference in sunny Countries but in the UK our activities revolve around the weather lol. And also in my experience, films get worse as the trilogy goes on, people might not have expected a 3rd to be very good but it turns out it better than the 2nd and so word of mouth would be very good for this film. You're exactly right, Julie! It's like this in the US too. Unless we've been having great weather for an extended period, people tend to go out and spend nice days outside rather than to go to the movies or some other indoor event, especially around Memorial Day which is the first real "summer" weekend of the year. And you're right about the trilogy fears too. Coming off of MIB2, people were going to be undoubtedly hesitant until word about whether MIB3 was good or bad came out. People are not going to flock to see the third movie in a franchise in which the second was pretty bad until they hear if it is actually good. If there is a lesson here, it's to just be patient and wait before we jump to any conclusions. We went through the same thing with the Karate Kid movie while it was in production, and we all know how successful that was. In the future, we should probably hold off on the doom and gloom until it becomes abundantly clear that there is indeed doom and gloom to lament about. Thanks for staying positive, Julie!
  15. I seem to remember saying something like this would happen.
  16. Lol... not going to say anything right now... Going to let this continue to develop.
  17. Yes! Something to take him out of character a little and explore his acting range.
  18. Just came back from seeing it. I liked it quite a bit. The movie theater was packed; rainy weekend here in the northeast after all. I had trouble finding parking when I arrived at the theater... that was a tip off that there might be a lot of people. We arrived just on time for the 3D showing, so I asked the gentleman who took our tickets whether there were a lot of people in the theater and he replied that there were. We got in while the previews were still rolling and the theater was indeed packed. We couldn't see many available seats and ended up taking two that were very close to the front. People laughed throughout the movie... that "O...K..." line always gets me. The overwhelming majority of the audience clapped at the end, and people looked like that had really enjoyed it as they walked out. It will be interesting to see if this type of turnout is an anomaly at this particular theater on this particular day, or weather what I saw today will be reflected nationally in the sales numbers.
  19. Many people rely on the reviews of others before they see a movie... It's actually why they still exist in the print media and review sites remain so popular. In many cases, what we may like or not like won't be properly reflected by the opinions of the wider audience, but in this particular instance, it's good to see this movie receive good reviews and have some positive press and word of mouth behind it from the wider audience and not just the fans. While it won't affect the quality of the movie, positive reviews and press will help it at the box office as those who might have been queasy about seeing MIB3 (due to the general perception of MIB2) hear that it's actually a good movie and worth seeing in theaters.
  20. It's getting a decent amount of positive press and good word of mouth. 69% on RT and 76% of the regular folks who who saw it, liked it. Yahoo users have given it 4 out of 5 stars, and even that may be off. It has received a few 1 star ratings with some of those "viewers" telling people to go see the Avengers, so the real rating is likely higher.
  21. I still haven't seen the movie yet, as is the case with a lot of others I know, because we've had some great weather here over the last few days. That, coupled with Memorial Day weekend makes it tough for people to flock to the movie theater... too many other things to do outside. We're also dealing with a very busy, crowded summer for blockbuster movies: Avengers, TDKR, MIB3, The Expendables, Prometheus, Spider Man, GI Joe: Retaliation, The Bourne Legacy. I can't recall another summer with so many big, blockbuster movies. It really serves to suck some of the excitement (and money) out of the room for any one movie. We'll have to see how it tracks over the next week into next weekend. Word of mouth might also be important here as I'm sure people may be hesitant to check out it out given the disappointment of MIB2. Aside 1: I also get the feeling that MIB3 is stuck in the superhero movie war between Avengers fans and TDKR fans. A lot of Avengers fans out there seem to be quite upset that Avengers was overtaken and many have set out to pan MIB3 on a few forums and message boards. Many of them are already a little high stung given the tension that exists with TDKR fans as to which movie will be better. Just for the record... Batman, all day, everyday. Aside 2: My girlfriend and I took a stroll by the beach today and some guy walked past up with an MIB3 t-shirt on. No grown man is going to wear that shirt unless he like the movie.
  22. Haven't seen it yet... planning to check it out this week.
  23. You have to love the quick tap to the face. It could have been a lot worse for the reporter.
