  1. since you guys gave me such great feedback on my last piece, I decided to share another from the same project, this piece I love b/c of my rhyme scheme, and the fact that I wrote it on auto-pilot, while actually trying to do a free write (just writing non-stop for a certain amount of time)...anyway more feedback would be much appreciated guys, as i'm trying to write something new lol

    Wise Idea

While I was minding my own business the other day, an idea ran by and shot me in the brain

And it shook me to the depths of my soul because I had no idea from which way it came

On the inside my fear left me vulnerable like an open target in direct range

And though my heart stood in the middle of a deadly storm, I did not wish the climate to change

For I believe a life without fear is total chaos and depravity

And a selfish human kind, is no kind of true humanity

There is no great talent without dilapidated honesty

And when people don't lie, it really truly doesn't bother me

I'd much rather you hurt my feelings, than keep your truths to yourself....

Because being a writer with no outlet is not good for my mental health

So I took that idea in the form of a bullet and prepared myself for round two....

Then loaded it into the barrel of the gun and smiled in satisfaction as it went through

But then I was conflicted on where to aim it

And temptation became impatient, and there was no way for me to tame it

So I pointed it towards the sky to let that oppressed bullet escape

But instead it boomeranged and came back to me in the form of something great

A whisper in the wind that lead me to use my talents to the fullest

And I can't tell you how greatful I am, for my encounter with that wise little bullet

    ash

*if you're confused by the imagery in this piece,as I just realized some people may be, just know that i'm not a violent person lol. The "bullet" and the "gun" are just metaphors for "idea" and "creativity"..this piece is about being inspired and using the product of that, to inspire something creative in someone else :1-smile:

ASK THE DJ: JAZZY JEFF By MICHAEL HAMERSLY

    mhamersly@miamiherald.com

You remember DJ Jazzy Jeff for his work with Will Smith both on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and in the recording studio (Parents Just Don't Understand, Girls Ain't Nothin But Trouble, Summertime). But the Philly musician is also one of the best DJs you'll ever see step behind the decks. Check him out tonight and Saturday at his new residency at Shine in the Shelborne Hotel.

Q: What made you want a residency at Shine?

It was incredible the first time, so I just had to come back -- the vibe was great.

Q: Will we be seeing Will Smith dropping by?

If he's in Miami, I'm sure he'll come by to party with me.

Q: Do you miss the Fresh Prince show?

Not really . . . it was a lot of fun, but that was a long time ago. It was cool while it lasted.

Q: Do you try to incorporate a Philly feel into your sets?

I think I try to be universal -- I travel around the world so much. I get bits and pieces of music wherever I go. I don't like to be trapped into any kind of feel; I let it take me where the vibe is that night.

Q: How about stuff from your work with Will?

Sometimes Summertime -- it depends on the vibe.

Q: Who has had the most influence on you developing your sound?

I think growing up in Philly -- the Gamble & Huff sound.

Q: How deeply do you get into the party scene that surrounds nightclubs, or are you in it strictly for the music?

I'm a music head: I don't care if it's in a club, or in the park. I love music -- that's my life.

Q: Do you think technological advances have diminished the quality of today's new DJs?

No, because if you can't mix, nothing can do it for you. I love technology, but you have to have the skill to go along with it.

Q: Any advice for young aspiring DJs?

Practice, practice, practice, and surround yourself with honest people who will tell you the truth. If you suck, make sure they tell you. That's the only way for you to get better.

Q: How old were you when you knew you'd be a DJ, and what were the circumstances?

I was 10. I remember watching older DJs command the crowd and saying, ``I wanna be just like them -- wow.''

Q: Name a musician you admire the most and why?

Herbie Hancock. He wasn't afraid to try new things. He used a DJ when no one else had one.

Q: What would you do if you had to change careers?

    Die.

Q: What about you would surprise people?

I am a incredible cook. I cook for all my friends -- I love it. It calms me down from this crazy industry.

*jeff's just too damn cool lol

  3. Umm, wow thnx for all the great feedback guys I really appreciate it I didn't expect to get too much of a response b/c these pieces are about two years old. I wrote them during my senior year in HS, and I think they were actually a couple mths. apart, originally it was just the first poem that took about 15-20 mins, to write....they were compiled with some others i wrote for a project, I may post one or two others

FuQ, trust me I'm working on it lol copyrights, publishing and all. I actually have performed these pieces and gotten great response, so that def. inspired me to write more. That's my dream to be a writer(more than I feel I am, you know?) so hopefully things will work out for me sooner or later..I'd be honored to be in your "binder of poems" you know I love ya lol

  4. i've been digging thru my old stuff trying to get inspired, and i came across this two part poem of mine that I really loved, seems strange cuz it's hard for me to pick a fave of something i wrote, but this is "the truth" for me lol anyway here goes:

    ENTRAPMENT (Part I, Free Me)

Free me...from my current state of mind because it's making me crazy

Free me...from female intuition because my soul feels hazy

Free me...from past oppressions and temptations that say,"come hither"

Free me...from the stress of life, for my heart has began to wither

Free me...from the secrets that hold me forever captive in their grasp

Free me...from the pains of my future and the joys of my past

Free me...from things i don't know, for I hear ignorance is bliss

Free me...as if i were of value, something you would surely miss

Free me...from your judgement, your criticisms, and critiques

Free me...from my hidden talents for my mind is too unique

Free me...from jealousy and hatred, for there's nothing in me you should fear

Free me...from what you think you know, for there's more to what you hear

Free me...from the cold stares I receive when I come to a crossroads

Free me...from remembering every great lesson i've ever been told

Free me...from the storm within, that even the wildest flames couldn't smolder

Free me...from imprisonment of this body when my mind is so much older

Free me...from first impressions, and what you look at when you see me

Free me...from what it is you see when you look at me

Free me...from stereotypes and assumptions that hold back people of my kind

FREEDOM hold me tighter in my current state of mind......

ENTRAPMENT (Part II, I'm Free Now)

I'm free now...from that state of mind that had me second-guessing

I'm free now...from intuition of a gender that had me digressing

I'm free now...from old opressions and temptations that kept on calling

I'm free now...from life's stresses, and my heart rate is no longer falling

I'm free now...from secrets that vowed to grip me for as long as i live

I'm free now...from joys and pains in my past and future like nectar in my sieve

I'm free now...from ignorant bliss-I hold knowledge of great weight

I'm free now...because you let go, then reached again when it was too late

I'm free now...from critiques, criticisms, and judgements of any kind

I'm free now...from my hidden talents, that are too unique and far gone to find

I'm free now...from your hatred, jealousy, and everything else you were intimidated by

I'm free now...from what you think you heard, when you thought the truth was a lie

I'm free now...from entwined crossroads and the cold stares of strangers

I'm free now...from remembering great lessons and being wary of safe dangers

I'm free now...from the wild climate of an erratic storm within

I'm free now...from the immaturity of my age as the expansion of my mind begins

I'm free now...from first impressions and what you thought of when you first saw me

I'm free now...from the dirty looks and opinions that block what you can truly see

I'm free now...from stereotypes, assumptions, and petty little mind games

EMANCIPATED...through my heart and soul, and i guarantee I'll never be the same

    -ash

i apologize for the repetition, even my teacher at the time said it was killing the imagery, but it just doesn't flow the same to me when i change it, i'd be glad to know what you think though, maybe i'll post more of my old stuff

  5. haha Will did a little interview with 3 6 mafia backstage will was saying they handled it well, getting the Oscar ( i hope he was just being nice) and how he was mad they got one before him LOL..Ludacris is too damn happy about it if you ask me , Oprah goes "Lord, what Dr. Martin Luther King must be thinking" LOL...and she just looks like she can't believe it either

  6. i'm watching Oprah's Oscar special and Gayle King (her best friend) was interviewing Jamie Foxx, then up pops Will, then up pops Morgan Freeman (my fave actor, he's amazing), then up pops Terrance Howard, so the guys are all standing there and Will's saying how it does his heart so good to see so many black people at the Oscars, and how Terrance and Jamie are the only men who've made him cry in his adult life lol then all of a sudden Queen Latifah, and Jada push they're way through (acting silly)then everybody's like "Black people @ the Oscars!" it was SO funny :kekeke: then Oprah was saying how that would've made a great picture...they did all look really nice standing there.

  7. i can't believe it either, i haven't laughed so hard in a long time, i thought the lady who sang "In The Deep" from Crash was gonna win (love that song)...Will presented Foreign Language Film in like three different languages, he's so goofy

  8. caught one little interview with Billy Bush( i think), he's like "the Oscar goes to Will Smith! your wife is so beautiful"and he basically asked them about getting ready for the show and Jada said they have to have seperate rooms cuz Will plays too much when it's time to get ready(lol) and he asked about kids maybe catching mom and dad on the show Will said "Man they don't care nothin' about this stuff, they might see us they might not", Billy kept flirting with Jada he's like "if there was an award for Most Beautiful..." Will's like "be careful now that's my wife" and Billy's like "I was just gonna say she looks nice" and they laughed and walked away

  9. I remember that interview Angel she said the kids are definitely more afraid of dad, mom's just a warning that's funny how jaden gets on the phone and tells

Haha poor babies they have a lot of the same rules as mom and dad had growing up and jada wasn't allowed a lot of tv. I think it's cool though cuz she says she encourages them to read instead of watching hrs of tv or ride a bike before playing a video game..........but yeah I'd go crazy too but I guess they're used to it, she says they're more into movie watching anyway, stuff like the Incredibles lol

  10. That's why I'm watching tim, maybe we'll hear some movie news about Pursuit or something jada's got a new one as well called Reign O'er Me with adam sandler, don cheadle and Liv Tyler that sounds interesting the Oscars are too long, so I'm looking out for the highlights cuz I know I won't watch the whole show

  11. What station are the Oscars on? For goodness sakes, I hope they aren't on NBC. The West Wing's been preempted for most of Feb because of the Olympics, and I've been anticipating it's return all week.

actually Max, i think they're on ABC

  12. Hey guys, I know I haven't been posting/participating around here as much as I used to, just sorting out some things you know? Well I'm asking that you guys keep me in your good thoughts and prayers b/c my auntie was in a car accident yesterday. She was driving on the freeway and hit a couple cars and a truck and a wall before the car finally stopped turns out she'd had a seizure while driving and her two oldest kids were in the car with her. The scary thing is that she had a seizure recently at work, went to the doctor had all types of tests and they still don't know what's wrong with her so if you could send a few prayers my way or even good thoughts, they'd be much appreciated.

    Thnx, ash
