  1. Karate Kid remake?

Hollywood's desire to remake everything is incredible, and the rumour that they could be eyeing a Karate Kid remake sounds bizarre but not unbelievable with today's money making studios.

After all the film is looking a bit dated, and the original actors have all moved on enough from these roles, so why not have another one? Introduce some new hipper stars and scenarios, maybe make it a little more gritty, oh boy, I'm talking myself into this one already!

The rumour is from one of those pesky sources, although this one seems to carry a little more weight with it than most.

A source told IGN that Sony Pictures is working on a remake of The Karate Kid which will be produced by the Will Smith production company and Jerry Weintraub. Weintraub just happened to produce the original film.

The Karate Kid is twenty-three years old, it was made in 1984 and starred Pat Morita and Ralph Macchio as Karate teacher and pupil respectively. Obviously the teacher is a master who is living a quiet life in the U.S., and the pupil is a headstrong and young man who is impatient and eager to learn, and for that matter to show off. It sparked a number of sequels and made a fair impact at the time.

Apparently, and this gives us some hope that the film might be in production for a good few years, Will Smith's son is being looked to for the remake, and if that means the lead then we could be here a little while, after all Jaden Christopher Syre Smith is only nine right now.

There's no word back from anyone as yet, so it's a big rumour, but a good one. A new young, black and modernised Karate Kid facing all today's pressures, not the lighter ones of the eighties. If this was made realistically then we could be seeing something a bit darker and harder.

You know what, I'm actually liking this idea.

  2. What a Handsome Couple

Yeah, they might have an “open” relationship, but whatever works, right??

Don't even start up that idiotic crap again. Go 2 the Sony board if u wanna talk about tabloid lies.

I'm not sure if that was directed at me, but I didn't write that. I just copied it from another site.

  3. 'Action, not jingoistic action'

"I didn't want this to be an 'America kicks (butt)' movie," he says. "I wanted action but not jingoistic action."

The film was shown in a working-class London neighborhood, and the sequence drew an ovation. Berg decided audiences were cheering a win over terrorism, not nationalism, and kept the scene.

"He's not afraid of trying anything if he thinks it's good for the movie," Foxx says. "He's not a cautious guy. That's what makes him fun to work with.

    "Well, that, and he's crazy."

"There's a system to it," Berg says, now frowning at a Rubik's cube on the set of Hancock, his next movie. "You're supposed to be able to do it in just eight turns. I just can't …"

He's filming a key fight scene between Smith and Theron. Four video monitors capture the action, but Berg is fixated on the cube.

Or seems to be. Somehow, he notices something amiss in the shot, which requires a truck driver to scramble out of the cab of an 18-wheeler as Theron approaches it. The driver is descending the cab, from about 10 feet off the ground.

It's not fast enough for Berg, who sprints from his seat to the big rig. "Here, like this," Berg says, leaping from the cab, not bothering with stairs. The actor (John Dykstra) shakes his head and grins. No way he's jumping.

Berg jogs back to his chair and snatches the cube, given to him by Smith, who learned how to solve the puzzle while making The Pursuit of Happyness.

"Now what did Will say the secret was?" Berg mutters, again seemingly ignoring the monitors as the scene rolls anew. You get the feeling that if you dropped a box of matches, Berg could tell you how many were on the ground.

"Don't let him fool you," Smith says. "You think he's making a sports movie. Or a political movie. Or a superhero movie. But what he really makes is dramas, hidden beneath the other stuff. He's a natural director."

  5. Metropolis 2.0

Remake season is kicking it off early this year with a reimagining of Fritz Lang’s classic, Metropolis. Directed by Zack Snyder, the film will star veteran science fiction actor Will Smith. “I dun Asimov, I dun Matheson,” Smith rapped to the Allied Press yesterday, “In ma fly space ship, think I’m gunna get some!” Get some indeed. The Oscar buzz is already hot for this one, as it has been suggested that Smith was wrongly snubbed in the past for his work in Ali and Bad Boys II. Metropolis tells the story of class struggle in a futuristic city, although Snyder has been quite forthright in his plans to update the political aspect of the story to be more relatable to modern audiences. “This is going to be about communism the way 300 was about Greeks and Persians,” the director claimed amidst lines of coke. Playing the part of Maria, the beautiful revolutionary cum female android (or “gynoid”), is Miss Beyoncé Knowles, known from such mega-blockbuster super hits as Austin Powers 3 and The Pink Panther remake.

  6. INHERITING THE EARTH

“I Am Legend” (Dec. 14), adapted from the same novel as “The Omega Man,” takes place after a plague that wipes out most of humanity and transforms others into bloodthirsty nocturnal creatures. Will Smith stars as possibly the last human on Earth.

Smith said he spends much of the movie in silence, with just a dog for company. To help capture the character’s desperate loneliness, Smith met with prisoners of war and inmates who lived in solitary confinement, including one man left alone so long he claimed he had trained cockroaches to gather food.

“It’s fun to have a little peace and quiet, but peace and quiet turns into your worst nightmare very, very quickly,” Smith said. “If you break your ankle, you need your tonsils out, anything that takes another person to do, the first time you get an infection, you’re in trouble,” Smith said. “The reason that there are cities and civilizations … is that you can’t survive by yourself.”

  7. K-Smith Speaks

Nephew of Will Smith sets his sights on being the next "Ladies Man" of rap.

September 20, 2007 - There's no question about it, K-Smith has got it good. For starters the Philly bred rapper is related to Big Willie. That's right, Will Smith is his uncle. Having somebody of that caliber in your corner goes a long way in an industry that's still ruled by #4080.

"I mean he gave me all the freedom to control my whole creative process for the album," he says of Uncle Will's involvement with his debut project. "He really helped me financially and with the business aspect of things. He doesn't dictate anything to me. He just shows me the ropes. Everything is my decision; he's just there to oversee everything." What this means is that he's not there to turn K-Smith into Will Smith, Jr. "Not at all, not at all," the young rapper laughs.

While other up-in-coming rappers continue to play it hard by continually repeating the bling themed excess of "gangsta verite," K-Smith prefers to keep it slick and smooth. He goes for more of a ladies man approach. Heck, his first single, "Better Man," features non other than Omarion on the hook. That should tell you something right there.

"I've got a lot of tracks for the ladies," says Smith. "Yeah, I'm a ladies man. I love the ladies, man." When asked why he didn't go the more popular thug route Smith is quick to point out, "Because that's not the type of artist I am. I mean I have songs for my fellas, that they'll be able to relate to. But I just go off the type of person that I am naturally. And I know that on the daily what I like to do is hang out with beautiful women. There's nothing wrong with that at all."

Even though Smith is a self-proclaimed "ladies man," he's still got a fair amount of the streets running through his blood. Born and bred in Philadelphia, he's spent a little bit of time in juvenile detention. Cliché as it may sound, too, music pretty much saved his life and calmed down his more wild side. "Absolutely," he says. "Music definitely allowed me to clean up my act and stay focused on one thing. Instead of being out on the streets, I go into the studio."

Speaking of studios, Smith is lucky on that front. Instead of sleeping on his uncle's couch, he actually has his own semi-private wing at the Will Smith estate. "I actually got a whole wing to myself," he says when asked how comfortable the couches are at Smith Manor. "I got my whole wing. My side of the house is like living in an apartment." Plus what's nice is that the family is basically right around the corner. "I love the fact that I'm out there with my uncle Will and everybody. I get to watch what he does every day, you know what I'm sayin'? I get to watch him. Who better to watch? At the same time, though, I don't look at him like Will Smith. I look at him like my regular uncle. I've known him my whole life."

So what is it that makes K-Smith a better man than all the other rappers out there today? "A lot of artists right now, they have hot singles out. You know, they know how to make hot singles that get on the radio, but they don't know how to put a full package together. They don't know how to make a whole album hot," he boldly states. "Also, they don't know how to establish themselves as their own brand. A lot times the record is bigger than the artist. Me, I'm setting up the K-Smith brand, so I'll have longevity!"

  8. It’s easy to see how the two have built a multimillion-dollar enterprise — with Smith as the flagship brand. They practically finish each other’s sentences and refer to each other as business partners. Smith readily admits he wouldn’t be where he is today without Lassiter. “J.L. does everything,” he says. “My sensibilities are dead center and James’ sensibilities are much more outside the box. He’s looking to break the mold whereas I’m looking to maximize it. So our sensibilities blend into this beautiful, just slightly left of center [team]. I don’t choose my movies, so essentially J.L. goes through 50 scripts in the course of a year and says, ‘These are the three that are the best. What do you feel?’ Then we talk through my career strategy. But for the most part he does the heavy lifting.”

    […]

Their production company is currently working on at least four films for release under this arrangement: Time Share (2008), Tonight, He Comes (2008), [Note: This is the film MTV is reporting on - title is not yet firm. - LP] Sisters of Mercy (2008), and Lakeview Terrace (2007) with Samuel L. Jackson. “We plan to do at least one Will film and one non-Will film per year,” says Lassiter. “Our short-term goal is every year to make [Overbrook] grow. We have several movies in development.”

The pair also has a groundbreaking deal with UTV, India’s leading media company, to finance a slate of movies. They view the arrangement as a means to expand the international appeal for vehicles featuring diverse casts. For example, Bad Boys was only expected to gross about $5 million overseas but the film generated $75 million in international box-office receipts.

So what’s their long-term objective? To build Overbrook into a mammoth production company that will continue to develop high-quality films. Smith’s clout and Lassiter’s business acumen will be the elements that will help maintain Overbrook’s longevity.
