Community activist Charles "Charlie Mack" Alston talks about the man who attacked him. No one - not even the dumbest criminal in the world - would try to rob a 6-foot-7, 280-pound man, right? Wrong. Police said a knuckleheaded crook made that very mistake when he tried to hold up Charles "Charlie Mack" Alston, a human skyscraper and friend to Hollywood stars, at a West Philly gas station early yesterday. It took Alston all of a few seconds to overpower the robber, who was armed - but about eight inches shorter and 80 pounds lighter. "I guess he felt like he had the upper hand because he had a gun," shrugged Alston, 44, a movie producer, hip-hop-recording manager and longtime pal of Will Smith. "He was wrong." Alston said his encounter with the gun-toting thug went something like this: Shortly after midnight, he pulled into the Sunoco A-Plus minimarket at 38th Street and Girard Avenue in his BMW convertible to get gas. He chatted on the phone with his daughter, who was celebrating her 21st birthday, and bought a T-shirt from a street vendor nearby. When he got back into his BMW, he said, "This dude runs up and puts a gun in my stomach. "I'm looking at him, and he's feeling in my pocket, going, 'Where's the money at? Where's the money at?' " Alston, a Philly native, said he motioned to a pocket on his right leg that contained about $3,000 in cash. "I already got two thoughts in my mind: That this dude is not going to let me leave if he gets the money. He's going to shoot me," he said. "And, I'm not going to let him leave." Alston said he pulled out the cash and immediately grabbed onto the man's gun, then forced the crook to the ground. The robber screamed for help, Alston said, and then bit Alston on the right hand and scratched his face. Police said the crook took off after Alston got control of his gun, but not before grabbing about $2,700 of Alston's money. Alston, who lost two brothers to gun violence and whose annual summer "Party 4 Peace Celebrity Weekend" will again draw celebrities and star athletes to the city July 23-25, said he feels bad for his assailant. "We never know what the circumstance is," Mack said. "He could be a bad seed, or trying to feed his seed. To me, it's sad." Alston is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the robber's arrest. 'Karate Kid' sequel: 'We've been talking about it for weeks.' When your $40 million movie bows to $56 million, of course you’re going to start thinking about how to make a sequel. And Sony Pictures is indeed putting things into place. The studio confirmed yesterday that plans to reunite Jaden Smith with his star-making role as Dre Parker have been in the works for weeks. No writers have yet been hired, but the studio’s production president Doug Belgrad said, “We’ve been talking about it for weeks already. We didn’t want to jinx anything but we knew we had a playable movie and we were pretty excited about it. So we’re already kicking ideas around.” Director Harald Zwart added, “I would absolutely love to do a sequel. I think working with those guys was the best part of my career. So yeah, if they want me, I would love to do it again.” No word on ideas yet for the sequel, or even if the Smith clan would return to China for number two. Nelson Mandela and great-granddaughter Zenani Mandela In what is very sad news today, the great-granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, Zenani Mandela was killed in a car crash after returning home from the World Cup concert kickoff event which featured artists such as the Black Eyed Peas and Shakira. Zenani had just turned thirteen on Wednesday. According to ABCNews, Nelson Mandela will miss the opening World Cup game today as he is in mouring over the untimely death of his beloved great-granddaughter. Also according to the report, Zenani "was the only person to die or to be injured in the one-car accident in the township of Soweto." Wow.. well said, Ty! But I wouldn't say there is not close 2nd. There are many countries capable of beating Spain IMO: Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany.. I agree with you on Xavi - Iniesta though: they are both key players for us (shame they play with Barça :laugh:).
