  2. Will Smith says `fear' central theme in new movie Taipei, May 4 (CNA) Hollywood star Will Smith said Saturday that fear is a central concept in his new film "After Earth,"which he is currently promoting in Taiwan. He told reporters that when trying to find out what was preventing the father and son in the film from being close, "we determined that fear was the thing that keeps most people from doing and having the things that they want in their lives," said Smith, who is visiting Taiwan with his 15-year-old actor son Jaden. The film, to be released in theaters in Taiwan in June, is set 1,000 years in the future and stars the two Smiths as father-and-son Cypher and Kitai Raige. It is about the adventure of the father-son pair after their spaceship crash landed on a hostile planet known as Earth. In the film, teenaged Kitai and his estranged father are forced to embark on a journey across hostile terrain in order to get home, encountering an alien creature that escaped from the crash and other dangerous animals that now inhabit Earth. When asked about their biggest fears, the playful Smiths were quick to point out each other's fears. "You're still scared of elevators," 44-year-old Smith said to his son, who replied "I know you're scared of heights." After denying that he is afraid of heights, Smith admitted that he does not like mice. "If a mouse ran in here right now, I would hurt myself really badly trying to get out of here,"he said. Smith said he teaches his son to overcome fear in real life by forcing him to face the circumstances that are making him fearful. Comparing fear to a "weather pattern," he said fear peaks but also subsides, and after it subsides it reveals a lesson about life. "So whenever you're fearful, if you can just settle yourself down, the storm will soon pass," he said. Asked how he thinks Jaden has evolved as an actor, Smith said that when Jaden was younger, he was afraid to fall into an emotional space. His biggest breakthrough in the film was being able to let himself go and allow the camera to capture his emotions, he said. He is getting more comfortable with failing, making mistakes and allowing himself to "bleed emotionally" on camera, said Smith, adding that he thinks that is the key to giving memorable performances. At a news conference earlier in the day, Jaden said he and his father can relate to their characters in the film, as Kitai is following Cypher's footsteps and Cypher is learning to let go. It's a father-son story, but "it's almost like you're looking at our story at the same time," he said. http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aedu/201305040028.aspx ----- Will, Jaden Smith join local children to pray for earth Taipei, May 4 (CNA) Hollywood actor Will Smith and his actor son Jaden joined some 100 Taiwanese children and youths in the Taipei 101 building Saturday to pray for the protection of the Earth. The father-son pair, in Taiwan to promote their new film "After Earth," gave free movie tickets to the children and young people from the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families. Several of the children, in turn, gave the Smiths drawings they had made of the pair, small schoolbags and other gifts. The playful pair then carried the schoolbags on their shoulders and posed for funny pictures. Jaden, 15, dressed in black and wearing a cap, said that "After Earth" carries an environmental message and that he was glad to see all the children there "because it's really up to us to help the environment." "It's been quite overwhelming and we are extremely happy and thankful," 44-year-old Will said, referring to the warmth of the welcome they have received in Taipei. The Smiths and several of the children then filled out wish cards to be hung on a wish tree. Will wrote "love" and drew a heart on his wish card, while Jaden wrote "I wish we would use solar panels and less plastic." "After Earth," set 1,000 years in the future, stars the two Smiths as father-and-son Cypher and Kitai Raige. It is an action adventure film that not only depicts a father-son survival story but also emphasizes eco-friendliness, the Smiths said a day earlier. In order to convey the message of eco-friendliness, the duo that day lit up the Taipei 101 skyscraper, the world's highest green building, with a display of the film's title. The pair is expected to leave Taiwan for South Korea May 5. http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aedu/201305040020.aspx

  4. Will Smith ready to work with Ang Lee Taipei, May 4 (CNA) Hollywood star Will Smith said Saturday at an international news conference in Taipei that he is ready to work with Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee. Asked if he has thought about working with Lee, Will said he and Lee have been "sniffing around" a few projects at different times. "I'd love to work with Ang Lee. So tell him hurry up because I'm getting old," Smith said at the news conference, which was broadcast live on the Yahoo!Taiwan Celebrity Entertainment channel. "Director Lee. I'm here. I had to come to your hometown," Will said in a playful tone. "I'm ready to work when you're ready to work." Smith and his actor son Jaden arrived in Taiwan May 2 on a four-day trip to promote their new film "After Earth." Asked what it was like working with his son on the film, Will said that making movies is a family business for him and is "the only way I know how to parent." "For me, this is absolute perfection, to have my son with me working on the film and promoting the film," he added. Jaden said working with his father is "fun" and helpful as he can always ask his father any questions he might have. Smith senior said he has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes in the past few years with his family, describing it as a "very developmental time" devoted to projects such as music and screenplays. "So I think in the next three to five years, you'll see a lot coming from our family, from our company and from our group." "After Earth," set 1,000 years in the future, stars the two Smiths as father-and-son Cypher and Kitai Raige. The film depicts how teenage Kitai and his estranged father, Gen. Cypher Raige, must learn to work together and trust each other in order to return to their home in Nova Prime, a planet light years away from Earth, after their ship crash lands on the abandoned Earth. It is the second film in which the father and son have appeared together. They co-starred for the first time in the 2006 biographical drama "The Pursuit of Happyness," which was Jaden's film debut. At the press conference, the host taught Jaden to say "skateboard" and "I love Taiwanese girls" in Mandarin, with dad jokingly fine-tuning his son's accent. Also at the event, Laura Folta, general manager of Sony Pictures in Taiwan, gave Jaden a hand-made animal-skin crown from a Taiwanese aboriginal tribe and his father a handcrafted aboriginal machete that symbolizes power and authority. The father-son pair then posed in funny postures with their crown and sword for the assembled press. http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aedu/201305040007.aspx

Smith, who arrived in Taiwan on Thursday on a promotional tour, said it was "fantastic" to work with the 15-year-old in their second movie together, the sci-fi flick After Earth, set to hit cinemas in June. "Entertainment is our family business, so I am sure that if something comes up we'll do it again," Smith said at a red carpet fan meeting near the landmark Taipei 101 building, which was lit up with the movie's name. "He (Jaden) is looking forward to a comedy, he's been having to do lots of drama for his career. Drama has kind of been his signature and he's been asking to find a comedy," Smith said. The father and son duo first collaborated in the drama The Pursuit of Happyness, in which Smith played the role of father to his then eight-year-old son. After Earth tells the story of how Smith and Jaden fight to survive after they crash land on Earth, some 1,000 years after humans are forced to leave an uninhabitable Earth to live on another planet. Jaden, who was also on site to greet hundreds of cheering Taiwanese fans, advised people to cut down on plastics, use solar panels and take shorter showers to help protect the earth. http://www.enca.com/life/will-smith-eyes-comedy-son

  13. Will, Jaden Smith arrive in Taiwan to promote 'After Earth' Taipei, May 2 (CNA) Hollywood star Will Smith and his 15-year-old son and young actor Jaden were greeted by screaming fans in Taiwan on Thursday as the pair arrived to promote their new film "After Earth." The father-son pair arrived from Japan late in the evening to dozens of fans waiting at Taipei Songshan Airport. Smiling, the Smiths waved and shook hands with the crowds and signed autographs for many of them. The 44-year-old superstar and his son then headed to their hotel in Taipei, where they were also dozens of waiting fans. Smith, wearing a grey top, approached the screaming fans briefly to sign an autograph. He then smiled and waved at the crowd before walking into the hotel. It is the first visit for Smith and his son. Tsai Li-chih, a 22-year-old movie lover who traveled from southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung to see Will Smith, told CNA he looks forward to the 3-D special effects in "After Earth," the oversized animals that endanger human beings, the bond between the father-son pair and their acting. "I want to see how they fight difficulty together," said Tsai, who described Will Smith as an actor who could take on any role. "He could be moving, as in 'The Pursuit of Happyness,' funny and cool as in 'Men in Black,' and serious as in 'I Am Legend,' said Tsai, who prepared 13 posters he had hoped the star could autographed for him. "We are movie fans and it's rare for U.S. or European movie stars to come to Taiwan," said Meilin Chen, 24, also among the fans waiting outside of the hotel. "We don't have a chance to go abroad, so we came here to see our idol," said Chen, who came to see the Hollywood star with her friend. The Taiwan visit is part of an Asia promotional tour for the science-fiction thriller that will be released locally in June. During their stay, the Smiths will meet with fans in Taipei's vibrant Xinyi shopping district on the evening of May 3. The Taipei 101 tower, which dominates the area, will display the film's title in lights that night. On May 4, the actors will host an international news conference on the film at Le Meridien Taipei hotel, which will be broadcast live on the Yahoo!Taiwan Celebrity Entertainment channel. Later that day, the Smiths will attend a charity event sponsored by the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families at Taipei 101, and pray with local youths there for protection of the Earth and the natural environment. Before departing Taiwan on the evening of May 5, Jaden will join with Mandopop singer J.J. Lin at Breeze Center in Taipei to promote products that they have jointly endorsed. The Smiths are scheduled to head to South Korea after Taiwan. "After Earth," set 1,000 years in the future, stars the two Smiths as father-and-son Cypher and Kitai Raige. 18. Will Smith to arrive in Taiwan May 2 for movie promotion Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Hollywood superstar Will Smith is scheduled to arrive in Taipei Thursday, along with his 15-year-old son Jaden, to promote their new film "After Earth," Sony Pictures said Wednesday. It will be their first visit to Taiwan, the film company said. Besides the film promotion, the father-son pair will also attend public interest activities during their stay, Sony Pictures said, adding that Jaden will take advantage of the visit to promote his own clothing brand MSFTS. The Taiwan visit is part of an Asia promotional tour for their new science-fiction thriller that will be released in June. The tour will also take them to Japan and South Korea. They co-starred for the first time in the 2006 biographical drama "The Pursuit of Happyness," which was Jaden's film debut. The Smiths' visit comes on the heels of a whirlwind trip by Tom Cruise April 5-7 to drum up interest in his new sci-fic action film "Oblivion." The visits indicate the great importance Hollywood filmmakers attach to the local movie market, industry sources said. Taiwan has emerged as one of the world's top 15 film markets outside North America, the sources said. With far less stringent film censorship rules than China, Taiwan has gradually become an important overseas market for Hollywood filmmakers to measure their movies' worldwide box-office potential. More and more Hollywood blockbusters have premiered in Taiwan or have been launched in Taiwan and North America simultaneously, the sources said. Following the Smiths' visit May 2-5, Chicago-born actor John Cusack will come to Taiwan May 6 to promote his new film "The Numbers Station." Movie stars Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid are also scheduled to visit Taiwan in July to promote their new movie "At Any Price." http://focustaiwan.tw/news/aall/201305010018.aspx
