TV One Celebrates Independence Day With Founding Fathers of the Hip Hop Nation Weekend Marathon

Silver Spring, MD, June 27, 2005 -- TV One will celebrate Independence Day in its own special way July 3-4 with the Founding Fathers of the Hip Hop Nation Independence Day Weekend Marathon, beginning July 3 at 9 PM with the TV One premiere of Beat Street, the pioneering hip hop movie covering the early days of rap music and featuring appearances by hip hop originators Kool Herc, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa, and more.

Over the course of more than 30 hours, the marathon honors 25 years of the hip hop culture, with a wide range of music, comedy and interview series and specials featuring the founding fathers (and mothers) of hip hop from early groundbreaking rap acts Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J and Whodini to recent Grammy winners Outkast. Other superstar appearances include contemporary legends such as Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J, the late Notorious B.I.G., and even a rare appearance by Tupac Shakur from his days as a back-up dancer for the group Digital Underground.

The marathon also features profiles and interviews with those who have branched out from hip hop into movie stardom and media entrepreneurship, such as Will Smith, Queen Latifah and Russell Simmons.

The lineup includes TV One On One interviews with Will Smith and Queen Latifah, a special edition of TV One Access profiling rap music moguls entitled 'Hip Hop, Incorporated', episodes of Martin and It's Showtime At The Apollo featuring appearances from rap music pioneers, and a special return presentation of Historymakers, in which Radio One founderCathy Hughes interviews DefJam founder and hip hop impresario Russell Simmons.

Leading up to the holiday weekend, TV One will offer a special one-hour episode of Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin that premieres Wednesday, June 29 at 8 PM, featuring TV One's signature chef offering tips for that holiday cookout. G. Garvin will share recipes, including his own favorite barbecue sauce and signature baby back ribs, plus offer tips for turning out perfectly grilled meat and fish that will help viewers celebrate July 4th in style.

The network will also premiere its exclusive TV One on One interview with movie and music superstar Will Smith on Thursday, June 30 from 8-9 PM (ET). Host Catherine Hughes conducts a wide-ranging and insightful interview with one of America's hottest box-office and music stars, covering subjects ranging from his multi-faceted career, his parents, wife Jada Pinkett Smith and children, why he avoids politics and his passion about his role as an ambassador for AIDS awareness.
