Ale
PHILADELPHIA - November 18, 2010 (WPVI) -- 6abc is holding a live webcast on Thursday in hopes of raising awareness and educate the public about the disease and its complications. One of the participants is James Avery, an actor best known for his role as Uncle Phil on the hit comedy "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." He's spreading the word about the disease he's lived with for 10 years. "It's a horrible disease," Avery said. "It eats you up piece by piece." Avery says he was in denial at first about having diabetes, so he didn't take care of himself. That contributed to complications with his left foot and kidney disease. Uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to heart disease, stroke and blindness. Avery is now participating in several forums...hoping to prevent others from going down the same path. His message is simple. "Go to your doctor, get examined, watch what you eat, be aware," he said.http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/health&id=7796674
