Marc Anthony Named Executive Music Producer of 'Hawthorne'

Grammy-winning singer Marc Anthony has been named the executive music producer of the TNT medical drama "Hawthorne," starring Jada Pinkett Smith.

Anthony, who also appears on the show as Det. Nick Renata, has been tapped to create the "signature" sound of the show. The one-hour drama centers around Christina Hawthorne, a chief nursing officer played by Pickett Smith. Her character is grappling with the stress and rigors of helping to manage a financially-strapped hospital.

The third season begins airing June 14 (10/9c) and will include theme music composed by Anthony and creative partner Julio Reyes.

"We compose from scratch and write pieces and incorporate them into the show during pivotal moments," Anthony told Billboard while taking a break from filming the program. "Certain characters and situations have a certain sound."

Pinkett Smith, an executive producer on the show, spoke to Billboard about the music style and approach from Anthony, one of the biggest names in Latin music.

"When we first started, Marc said that the show had to have signature music," says Pinkett Smith. "The music had to be identifiable to the show. You want to be able to recognize the music and the show even if you're in another room."

Most of the drama's 10 episodes this season have already been shot as Anthony puts the finishing touches on the music.

Up next, Anthony and his wife Jennifer Lopez begin a whirlwind journey in July, traveling to 21 Latin American countries over the span of five weeks for their new show: "Q'Viva The Chosen." Anthony calls the program a musical "docu-journey" in the name of bringing undiscovered entertainers to the U.S. where they will be showcased on TV. The network airing the show has not been announced.

Anthony's full schedule while balancing several projects has meant that he's sleeping very little these days. Last week while on set, the singer conceded he had only slept a handful of hours during his work on "Hawthorne" but called the TV project "worthy."

"I am thoroughly enthused," Anthony says. "I'm feeling more alive than ever."
