BET Cancels Rap City

This economy is ruining everything! First MTV announced that they were canceling its long-running pop culture show, TRL. And now I just got word that that BET is calling it quits on a hip-hop staple.

My source tells me that the BET's Rap City is done. I hear the change will take place on October 26th.

After a year of hearing whispers that the Viacom owned cable channel was thinking of canceling the sh*tty rap program, it looks like its finally happening.

Though

the news isn't surprising to me, it's still sad to see one of

television's longest running hip-hop shows go out like this.

Where would Hip-Hop be if not for shows like Rap City?

I mean, Big Tigger was corny as all hell, but he definitely made Rap City watchable. However, once Tigger left the show no other host could make it work.

J-Nicks, Mad Linx and Q45 tried their best, but have all failed miserably.

With MTV's TRL leaving the airwaves, and now Rap City receiving it's curtain call, you know it's only a matter of time before Rocsi and Terrence get their walking papers.

Let's all hope that BET performs a proper send off. There were so many great moments to relive.

BET's Rap City To Be Replaced By The Deal

October 1st, 2008 | Author: Edwin OrtizBET’s Rap City could well be considered one of the quintessential shows for promoting Hip Hop on television. Along with an organic vibe, it gives in-depth interviews and freestyles from the artists we love. Sadly, all great things come to an end.

According to BET.com’s Sound Off blog, Rap City and its two decades of Hip Hop history will be hanging its close sign up. Serving as a platform for well-established rappers and newcomers alike, Rap City made its debut in 1989 with host Chris Thomas (known as “The Mayor”), quickly becoming a must-watch for Hip Hop heads. By 1999, the show changed its name to Rap City: Tha Basement, and with new host Big Tigger, further supplanted itself as a major music source that lasted well into the next decade, with various hosts latching on to bring it new flavor.

However, recent times haven’t looked so great for the BET mainstay. After losing financial sponsorship this year [click to read] and with ratings slowly decreasing, Rap City became a question mark that wasn’t leading to any significant answers. In turn, BET has decided to replace the show in an effort to bring ratings back to a comfortable position.

The show taking its place, The Deal, has been described as a multi-faceted hour-long segment. Hosted by DJ Diamond Kutz, The Deal will begin its tenure on November 10th, following the official finale of Rap City.

Along with artist drop-ins and Hip Hop commentary, one of the main proponents of The Deal will feature a similar scheme to Vh1’s Pop Up Video, which aired from 1996 to 2002. As BET puts it, The Deal will play “the latest and great videos that include pop-up information, facts and quirky tidbits on the artist and/or the song itself,” a description closely resembling Pop Up Video’s “info nuggets.” Rap City’s most symbolic segment, "the booth," will also continue its presence on The Deal.

HipHopDX will keep you posted on any new developments concerning the end of Rap City and the emergence of The Deal.

I can't say i really care. Commercial Rap sucks. All of it. I haven't watched Rap City in a few years. I never say Big Tigger as corny. I grew up listening 2 him on the radio so when he got on Rap City, i was hyped. Around the time he left, the commercial side of music had gotten so bad that i couldn't bare 2 watch it anymore. As far as i know, Rap City no longer repped Hip-Hop music or culture for awhile. I remember back in the day when they would air all old school and 90's videos. Those were my favorite. When stuff like this happens, it's a reflection of what's popular. It takes fools like 50 Cent, Lil' Jon, Young Jeezy, and Lil' Wayne to do this. If JJ+FP, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah were runnin' the mainstream with intellegence and class, this kinda thing would never happen. The real Rap City has been off the air for years which is why i'm used 2 missing it.

VH1 reps real hip hop the best these days, that 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs Doc they're doing is brilliant, BET don't have the guts to do anything like that anymore

BET is almost as bad as MTV these days. The recent issue of Vibe has an article on how they declined since the 90's. Back then, they had 70% music programing compared to 20% today. They talked about how they dumped relevant shows like Teen Summit, BET News, and Caribian Rhythms (Rachel was soooooo fine). All their shows now suck and they are leaning more and more towards a commerical-only support of music. VH-1 should start a Hip-Hop sister station. After all, they've had Behind The Music specials on LL Cool J and other artists. They put together great documentarys like Last Days of Left Eye. Their Hip-Hop weeks and Hip-Hop Honors are some of the best specials i've ever seen.

My sentiments exactly, AJ. I haven't watched Rap City since they stopped doing Old School Wednesdays. Rap City WAS the perfect show after YO! MTV Raps went off the air but over time it regressed as BET regressed. The show didn't stay true to showing videos from commercial & independent artists. It just became another wing of the major labels "street teams". It became a marketing ploy and less & less about showing real hip-hop. I say good riddance to the hot garbage that was Rap City. Now if only BET would go off the air completely.....

I'm right with u. I used 2 watch BET all day long. Now i almost never watch it. I put 106 + Park on when they have a guest that i like on. Other than that, i watch TV show reruns that have nothing 2 do with BET that are, for the most part, on DVD. I remember a report that was done about 10 years ago. They compared MTV, VH-1, and BET and BET got the best review. They played the least amount of videos that had something explict in them (lyrics, images, etc). BET was once views as a very respectable network. Once it left Maryland and more than half of the offices went to New York, it started unwinding.
