EXCLUSIVE: Is Will Smith The New Captain America?

captainom4.jpg

When Marvel announced that “Captain America” was making its way to the big-screen, fans everywhere began speculating who would be donning the famous red-white-and-blue tights. Nothing has been heard since, but during an MTV News interview regarding his role in “Miracle at St. Anna,” actor Derek Luke let slip that a very prominent - and surprising - face could be the star of Marvel Studios’ next blockbuster film.

“I heard they offered Will Smith ‘Captain America,’” said Luke, adding that the intriguing casting rumor “just shows you how times have changed.”

While this word through the Hollywood grapevine is nothing more than a rumor at this point, it should be noted that Marvel hasn’t shied away from changing up the race - and gender - of established characters in recent years. Upon kicking off his celebrated take on “The Ultimates” (Marvel’s re-imagining of their classic superteam The Avengers), Mark Millar changed S.H.I.E.L.D. head honcho Nick Fury from a crew-cut, cigar-chomping, middle-aged white man to, well… Sam Jackson.

The decision, though aggressively debated back when the series debuted, seemed to receive some validation earlier this year when Jackson made his post-credits cameo in “Iron Man” as Fury.

Smith himself is no stranger to the four-color world, having recently starred as a down-on-his-luck superhero in “Hancock.” Given the success of that film however, it seems almost a given that a sequel could be in the offing. That makes the prospect of Smith starring in yet another superhero franchise seem unlikely, especially given the subversive tone of “Hancock.”

Along with providing some fresh material for the “Captain America” rumor mill, Luke also mentioned an interest in jumping into the superhero movie scene himself, and offered up a few characters he’d like to bring to the big screen.

“I would love to jump into Green Lantern,” said Luke. “There are a lot of stories I’m into… [like] Black Panther.”

So what do you think, Splash Page readers? Would you want to see Will Smith as Captain America? what about Derek Luke as Green Lantern or Black Panther on the big screen?

They might offer it to Will, but he won't accept it.

It's a big shame though, that race is the biggest reason for it.

With Will as Captain America, race would kinda of be an issue. Captain America's origins is that he was a soldier during WW2. With lots of America being segregated back then including the army, very few black men were even soldiers. It could present a realism problem for the movie.

Will should past on the character anyways because Captain America is a lame character.

This is would be Isaiah Bradley, The "FIRST" Captain America!! He was black as you can see in the picture below.

This is the Character that Will should play. If there is ANYONE that should play him, it is Will Smith.

If they go with the "Red, White, and Black" storyline, it will be AWESOME to see, No one else could play Captain America better, even if they go with the Steve Rogers version!

This has been posted on Ain't It Cool:

Awww Hell Yeah! Will Smith Is Not Captain America!

Hey folks, Harry here to restore your faith in the world - Multiple sources from MARVEL have confirmed that Derek Luke, of Spike Lee's MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to Will Smith and CAPTAIN AMERICA. Marvel never offered the part, nor did they approach or entertain a conversation about Will Smith for CAPTAIN AMERICA. That said - I'm sure they have a few parts that they'd like him for, just not Captain America.

So there ya go. They haven't gone insane and we don't need to be confused, angry and scared about it anymore.

Since he did Hancock, it's a bit soon 2 do any superhero stuff. I would much rather see him leave Hancock along and do another superhero movie down the road. Hancock was quirky and pretty average. If u have 2 work hard 2 make a sequel work, u shouldn't make it...and i think it would be work 2 do another Hancock movie. It just wasn't good enough to do another.

I don't see the 'Prince playing many superheroes...or Capitan America for that matter. I would like him 2 choose a better match of a hero in the up coming years. And i hope he quits with the age excuses, saying he's gonna stop doing action movies and stop working in a few years.

Will Smith confirms he's not 'Captain America'

MTV Splash Page chased down Will Smith to put a nail in the coffin of the rumor they'd starter: that the actor had been offered the role of 'Captain America'.

The rumor was floated by actor Derek Luke during an interview, but quickly debunked by Ain't it Cool. Now Smith himself comments:

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige Outlines 'Captain America' Movie Plans -- Considering Will Smith?

Captain America is back! Well, as long as you can wait until 2011. This week, MTV News was invited to sit down with Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige -- the man behind “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk” and all the upcoming Marvel superhero films.

As we hung out in a boardroom at the new Marvel production facility, here are the big revelations that Feige had about the much-anticipated flick “The First Avenger: Captain America”:

- Feige acknowledged that “Captain America” might have difficulty playing overseas, which is one of the reasons for the title “The First Avenger: Captain America”. In other countries, it might be marketed as simply “The First Avenger.”

- The Cap story will be very realistic, about a scrawny kid who wants to prove himself, set during WWII.

- “Captain America” will be Marvel’s most internationally-located movie, as the character will be traveling all over the world.

- Marvel is more likely to get a name actor to play Captain America, because of the need for it to play well overseas. It seems doubtful that they’ll repeat the “Thor” move of going with a relative unknown.

- Feige said that the actor who plays Cap will be American. No Australians, Brits, etc.

- By the time his own films and the “Avengers” movies are over, Captain America could appear in as many as six movies.

- Since he needs a big, international name, Feige refused to eliminate one of the biggest stars in the world, Will Smith. He referred to Smith as being among the handful of international stars they’d consider.

- Although Smith is in the running, Feige shot down rumors that they’d be using the “Truth” storyline in the film. Although he said he enjoyed the comic, it wouldn’t make for an appropriate cinematic launch for the character.

- Marvel is definitely looking to get into the 3D realm soon. Feige recently saw “Up,” loved it, and said that he’d be watching James Cameron’s “Avatar” closely. Although “Iron Man II” will not be 3D, it is a possibility for “Captain America.”

- Pre-production officially begins in October, with plans to start filming on June 28th, 2010.

- Casting is expected to begin this summer.

- Joe Johnston and the writers are working on the script now.

- It will likely be a “save the world”-type story.

- Feige said that some of the unselected “Thor” actors may be candidates for the “Captain America” movie.

First Official Captain America Casting News

It's not so much as WHO has been cast, but who will NOT be. . .

7890L.jpg

Yep, you guessed it.

The speculation is over.

The long standing rumor has been laid to rest.

A source with Marvel Studios has just told me that Will Smith will not be portraying Captain America. The information linking Will Smith to the role of Captain America is completely inaccurate.

A big thanks goes out to the guys at IMDb. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have been able to officially debunk this info.
