DJ Premier Introduces a New Gang Starr Album

It’s been 16 years since fans received a new Gang Starr LP.

Nearly ten years after the passing of legendary East Coast emcee Guru, DJ Premier is announcing a new Gang Starr album. Specifically, the 53-year-old NYC legend took to social media this week to tease and introduce the next Gang Starr LP.

This Tuesday, DJ Premier asked his Twitter followers what would happen if he “released a new…,” alluding to a another, untitled piece of music from an unspecified group or artist. Then, putting together that puzzle’s pieces, Premier took to Instagram to share a visual featuring Nas; in that clip, the Illmatic lyricist asks, “Is it true there’s a new Gang Starr album?” Judging by this week’s promotional campaign, the answer to that is obviously “yes.”

It has been 16 years since Gang Starr debuted a new project, as the last Gang Starr album to hit shelves was 2003’s The Ownerz. Altogether, Premier and Guru cooked up six official full-length studio albums as Gang Starr, including historic releases such as 1991’s Step in the Arena and 1992’s Daily Operation. Outside of his duo with Premier, Guru also crafted solo albums like 1993’s Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 — his first full-length without his trailblazing Gang Starr collaborator by his side and the introductory entry in his acclaimed Jazzmatazz series.

You can take a look at DJ Premier’s original, Instagram-posted visual announcement regarding Gang Starr’s new studio project below, and stay tuned for more details concerning that effort.

Back in May, DJ Premier linked up with Griselda rappers Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine and Benny the Butcher for the collaborative single “Headlines.”

  2. Sure it's a good album. Not every album has to be a classic. A classic album needs to stand the test of time in my opinion. So you can't say an album is a classic when it just dropped. There is not much music right now I think I would look at as a classic in a few years.

I think the best album of 2019 so far is "Bandana" by Freddie Gibbs & Madlib. Very good production, crazy beatswitches.

Another very good "album" (though it's more like an EP) right now is "The Plugs I Met" by Benny The Butcher.

  3. It's a solid album. Sure not his best but easy in my Top 5 of the year so far.

He did a little less production on his own which I don't really like but there are still some really great songs on here.

At the moment my favorite track is "Everytime", you can check it out here:

Rest of the album is also on youtube.

    1) ‘K.R.I.T. HERE’
    2) ‘High End Country’ (Interlude)
    3) ‘Been Waitin’
    4) ‘I Make It Easy’
    5) ‘Addiction’ (Feat. Lil Wayne & Saweetie)
    6) ‘Energy’
    7) ‘Obvious’ (Feat. Rico Love)
    8) ‘I Made’ (Feat. Yella Beezy)
    9) ‘Everytime’ (Feat. Baby Rose)
    10) ‘Believe’
    11) ‘Prove It’ (Feat. J. Cole)
    12) ‘Family Matters’
    13) ‘”Blue Flame” (Interlude)’
    14) ‘Blue Flame Ballet’
    15) ‘Learned From Texas’
    16) ‘Outer Space’
    17) ‘High Beams’ (Feat. WOLFE de MÇHLS)
    18) ‘Life In the Sun’ (Feat. Camper)
    19) ‘M.I.S.S.I.S.S.I.P.P.I.’

  4. I don't really like that "Jarreau Of Rap" song, the production is a little annoying to me.

There are a few good tracks on that project like...

    • No Bad Energy
    • Lost Freestyle
    • The Art Of It
    • It Never Ends
    • QueensBridge Politics

"Beautiful Life" is nice too. "Highly Favored" may be the worst song. Don't like the beat at all.

Overall I think it's slightly above average. I would gave it a 3 out of 5.

Here is the full tracklisting with production credits:

    1. No Bad Energy” (prod. Swizz Beatz)
    2. “Vernon Family” (prod. Pharrell)
    3. “Jarreau of Rap (Skatt Attack) f. Al Jarreau & Keyon Harrold (prod. Eddie Cole)
    4. “Lost Freestyle” (prod. Statik Selektah)
    5. “Tanasia” (prod. RZA)
    6. “Royalty” f. RaVaughn (prod. Hit-Boy)
    7. “Who Are You” f. David Ranier (prod. Eric Hudson)
    8. “Adult Film” f. Swizz Beatz (prod. Swizz Beatz)
    9. “War Against Love” (prod. DJ Dahi & DJ Khalil)
    10. “The Art of It” f. J. Myers (prod. Pete Rock)”
    11. “Highly Favored” (prod. RZA)
    12. “Queens Wolf” (prod. DJ Toomp)
    13. “It Never Ends” (prod. Alchemist)
    14. “You Mean the World To Me” (prod. Kanye West)
    15. “Queens Bridge Politics” (prod. Pete Rock)
    16. “Beautiful Life” f. RaVaughn (prod. No I.D.)
  5. I think it's time for a thread that focuses on the UK artists. 2019 already blessed us with some very good albums. For example...

    Dave - Psychodrama

    Little Simz - Grey Area

    Skepta - Ignorance Is Bliss

Loyle Carner - Not Waving But Drowning

What are your favorite artists, albums or songs from the UK?

  6. Logic wouldn't be my first choice either but the track is pretty good. Way better than songs like "Get Lit" or "Live It Up". I don't think that Will's gonna drop an album though.

Unfortunately Logic is a little corny nowadays lyric wise. But he also put out some good stuff in the past. I would recommend listening to his first album "Under Pressure" or the first three Young Sinatra-Mixtapes (2010-2013). Second album was aight too but the rest of his discography isn't for me.

  7. New album "DAMN." is out now!

  9. Like I said, the problem is not the popularity of an album or artist... I just took Nelly for an example! "5.0" is just a random Pop-Rap album to me... just take a look at the featured artists: Chris Brown, T-Pain, Akon, Kelly Rowland, Keri Hilson... that's just mad predictable! Sure "Country Grammar" was way more successfull and maybe some tracks get played too much, so it may be hard to listen to them nowadays, but it just had it's own style... musically it was just better and way more interesting than his recent stuff imo. I would say the same thing about other albums/artists you posted too... but my intention is not to tell you to change your list. I just want to explain why I have a different opinion and why I don't understand some of your choices. But I have to agree, it would be interesting to hear some other opinions.

well maybe ja rule, eve, nelly, bob, and ludacris aren't underground but let's be real neither is jay z, game, eminem, kendrick lamar, kanye west, and j cole, let's just drop this debate because we all like some mainstream stuff considering we agree we're JJFP fans who are pioneers of mainstream rap...

Yeah sure, it's right what you say about JJFP and other rappers like Eminem, Kanye, Game or Jay-Z which sold millions of albums... of course they are mainstream! It's not like every popular album is bad but I just didn't get some choices you made on your list and probably never will... the albums I mentioned above for example! How is an album like "5.0" a modern classic without even mentioning "Country Grammar" and so on... maybe I just have to accept that we will never be in complete agreement.

But hey, at least there is some discussion in the forum, lol.
