  1. My wife and I enjoyed it a lot... and I mean, a lot! It was so fun seeing a reimaging of something we've seen so often and know so well. I've always thought that the general story lent itself well to a more serious, dramatized version, and I think they did an excellent job translating it for a modern audience.

The easter eggs are fun and really test your memory of the original. I'd suggest that anyone who is a fan of the original avoid watching it again as preparation for the remake. Test your memory and familiarity with the original by seeing how well you can connect the new version to the old.

I have a bunch of other thoughts (mostly positive) regarding some of the casting and story choices they made, but I'll hold off and let others chime in.

I've listened a few times now, and he's still got it. Glad to see the positive reaction and reception around the web.

I still ain't never let the hate break me.
I just wanted the respect first
I still ain't never letting fame change me.

    Sheesh....

  3. This tragedy feels incredibly surreal. Kobe was a basketball icon... the ultimate competitor... an ambassador of the game. It is shocking to see him pass in the prime of his post NBA career. He had a number of post-NBA business ventures, charities and mentor relationships that built on the amazing legacy of his NBA career. He was a giant who will be missed. And to hear that his 13 year old daughter, who he was mentoring, whose basketball team he was coaching, and who had dreams of making it to the WNBA, died as well is especially heartbreaking. My heart goes out to his wife Vanessa and his three surviving daughters... one of whom is only a few months old. I can't begin to imagine the kind of pain they are in, but I hope that in the coming days, weeks and months, they are surrounded by the love of friends, family and loved ones who will make the pain and the burden of their loss if only a little more bearable.

His parents and sisters are in my prayers as well. You never expect to see your child or sibling lose their life at such an early age and in such an unexpected fashion. I hope they are comforted and are able to comfort each other during what has to be an unbelievably difficult time.

I'm also praying for the families of the pilot and other individuals who died in the crash. Life is fleeting... it's a vapor... but I hope they are able to find comfort in the outpouring of love and support from their friends, extended families and communities.

Basketball legend Kobe Bryant and one of his daughters were among nine people killed Sunday morning when a helicopter crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California, sources and officials said.

Bryant, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore Bryant had been expected at the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks for a basketball game scheduled for Sunday. Gianna was expected to play in the game and Bryant was expected to coach, according to Lady Mavericks team director Evelyn Morales.

The helicopter crash, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, caused a brush fire, Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby said. The crash killed all nine people aboard, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

  4. I saw it last weekend and loved it. I thought they did a wonderful job telling a story that deserved to be told. There were major concerns in the industry and from fans alike that this was a cash grab that would result in a cheap, poorly made, nonsensical movie, but BB3 has surpassed the expectations of even some of the most ardent fans of the series. I like that they took special care to humanize Martin and Will, and provide some commentary on the consequences of the violence they so often found themselves in the middle of.  The humor was great, the acting was great, the action was great, though toned down from BB2, an the story was awesome. Definitely a movie to add to the collection.

  5. I like how Will went about Bad Boys for Life. He had no desire to mess up the franchise given how beloved the first two installments were, so he refused to sign on until the script was solid and worthy of a sequel. I expect his approach will be the same for Bad Boys 4, especially given the success we're expecting for Bad Boys for Life.

  6. The reception has been great. Movie goers are loving it and it's set to make some major money for a January release.

Box Office: ‘Bad Boys for Life’ Soaring to $70 Million Opening

Bad Boys for Life” is tracking for a solid launch with as much as $70 million at 3,740 venues in North America over the four-day holiday weekend, early estimates showed Friday.

The figure was nearly double pre-release forecasts. Some sources cautioned that the final number could be closer to $60 million but “Bad Boys for Life” clearly represents a major victory for Sony.

Saw this on Saturday, yet another Will Smith movie the critics can but the public love. I’m beginning to think there’s so kind of vendetta on him as an actor, or merely the critics are so far detached from what the audience actually wants is scary.

    A strong 7-8 out of 10.

Yeah, we enjoyed it quite a bit. Some of the critics are ridiculous... what can you do.

  8. 1 hour ago, Big Willie said:

94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes too.

This and Bright are proof of how critics are extremely detached from what the consumer actually wants from the film industry and Hollywood. Wills career is beginning to thrive again. He has the calibre to win an Oscar, but his forte is in the action, sci-fi, comedic roles. Im glad to see him returning to those genres.

Spies in Disguise looks like it’s gonna be a fun one for the family and Gemini Man looks dope as anything we’ve seen him do. Then of course Bad Boys for Life. It’s a very good time to be a Will Smith fan right now.

Ain't this the truth. It sounds like many of the critics went in looking to hate it, and surprise, surprise, found things to hate. Most off the criticism centered on "Why was this even made? Can't people just enjoy the one made 27 years ago?" The criticisms are also quite disparate. Some critics hated it because they viewed it as unnecessary a "scene by scene" remake of the original... it wasn't. Others hated it because too many things were changed and some of their supposed favorite parts from the original didn't make it into the live action version. Those two criticisms are mutually exclusive; this particular story can't be too similar and too different at the same time. The good thing is that I've noticed that some of those who have seen it and like it have called out the critics for some of this non-sense. Not to dismiss anyone's criticisms, but some of the bashing really is non-sense, and I'm glad to see that movie goers are smarter than what the critics give them credit for.

It's shaping up to be a big year for Will.

  9. Reviewers seem to be ok with it, but movie goers seem to love it so far.

Some of the reviews are quite divergent and pretty negative. There's a "Disney money grab" narrative that everyone who dislikes the movie has seemed to latch onto. Some have panned Will's performance as just a poor copycat of Robin Williams' while others have praised it for daring to be different from Robin's with a fresh, hip hop sensibility, while paying homage to the original.

  10. Will's statement on the role at CinemaCon:

    Quote

"The emotional and physical challenges of this film were really insane for me, but the guidance from and collaboration with the incredible Ang Lee we have managed to shoot something that has never been done before. It's an action adventure, but also an exploration of the idea of what one's younger self can teach one's older self. I'm 50 and the irony of becoming the 23-year-old Junior is that the 23-year-old me wouldn't have had the experience level to take on this role. It's a marriage of nuance, relatable characters with some crazy action also."

Very much forward to seeing this.

  11. Julie, go see it. I hear that Will killed it as Deadpool and quite a number of people liked the movie and are very impressed by his performance. As for the reviews, something is off... Take this one for instance... http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/Suicide-Squad-is-two-hours-of-9067798.php

The reviewer absolutely hated the movie and practically everything about it, but this paragraph stands out...

    Quote

To even talk about “Suicide Squad” is misleading, because it requires imposing a coherence on the material that isn’t really there. It takes place in Gotham City, at a time when Superman and Batman are already dead, and the authorities — embodied by an intelligence officer played by Viola Davis — are concerned about two things: that a being as powerful as Superman, but evil, might come and destroy the Earth. And about an alien who has already arrived and is growing in power.

Not sure how anyone can review a movie when they haven't grasped some of the more basic, foundational storylines of the movie and the movie's universe... all of which were made painfully clear. Batman's dead? Really? Who's the guy in the Justice League movie coming out next year? There's a spoiler regarding Suicide Squad that makes that statement even more absurd.

  12. Excellent interview by Will. He makes a cogent argument and frames the issue well. The problem isn't that he wasn't nominated or that individuals of color should be awarded just as much as others... the issue is that there is a systemic undercurrent of prejudice in the entertainment industry that often reflects that of society as a whole. Yes, there's a lack of diversity among those who choose the nominees, but that also extends to those who green light-movies, finance movies, write scripts and cast roles. It's no secret that black actors not name Halle, Denzel, Will, Samuel or Morgan have a short shelf life in Hollywood and find it hard to consistently get roles. More importantly, as Will pointed out, the effects extend past Hollywood. When young people watch movies and are hard-pressed to find individuals who look like them, reflect their culture and reflect their experiences, both in character and out of character, we do them a disservice. I think the most salient thing he said in the interview was something to the effect of... Look, it's not that serious... I'm just an actor... but it's important to remember that movies plant seeds for dreams.

All that said, and as right as he and Jada are, I didn't and still don't think Will was the right person to be at the forefront of this (very ironic given that was a major theme in concussion as well). My concern is that others will find the protest self serving and sour grapes as a result of not being nominated, making Will and Jada the story instead of the wider issue. It would be unfortunate if this damaged his reputation as an all around good guy in Hollywood. Janet Hubert, in her never-ending saltiness, has already called them out with many rallying to her side. Thankfully many other thoughtful actors of various racial background have echoed the same sentiments Will and Jada have noted, and even President Obama has weighed in.

In this age of Trump and banning Muslims, Ann Coulter and making sure minorities assimilate, this is a very important discussion to have. Janet must be even saltier today.

  13. Lol, It's not true, Typhoon. There were scheduling conflicts as Will was filming both Concussion and Suicide Squad. They were asking him to commit to two sequels for ID4 and he both wasn't able and wasn't willing to do that. And no, he didn't ask that Jaden be in the ID4 sequels.

No need to be disappointed... none of it is true. It's the internet... people love spreading lies.

  14. Great trailer, and the movie looks to be an awesome addition to the sci-fi genre. It basically addresses and springboard's off of every question I had at the end of ID4 back in 1996... when I was a kid. We've unfortunately never really seen a movie like this, and it's about time.

Are all of the aliens who attacked dead, or is there a contingent on earth? If there is a contingent on earth, how many, and how much of a problem will they present? Will humans be able to utilize alien technology and integrate it into our own technology... both military and every day. How quickly will we advance if we are able to utilize alien technology, and how will it affect our society? Speaking of society, what has become of world governments, how have the maps been redrawn, who are the big players? Are we seeing civil unrest, wars, unlikely alliances? How did 1996 affect society, governments, religion. And the biggest question... how have we prepared for a possible second engagement.

This universe is rich with stories... the sci-fi stuff, yes... but the human, societal narrative can be compelling as well. How does society respond to such a traumatic, pyrrhic victory? Are we still as petty as we were in 96? Have we splintered, or are we unified?

The writers may or may not have been able to create a great continuation of the original... we'll have to wait to see in theaters... but I'm confused as to why so many people found it hard to imagine what the storylines for a sequel could be when it seems so obvious. Even taking away the sci-fi... society is traumatized and in ruins, and it's not of our own making. That's a compelling story on just those merits.

  15. I think this movie will be anothe After Earth...too many superheroes movies and, also, these characters are not so well-known as Marvel´s...bad vibes...

Not necessarily... Guardians of the Galaxy did quite well, and very few people... even comic book fans... were well versed on the characters and their significance to the Marvel Universe.
