    'Legend' locked in overseas

Smith thriller still tops a foreign box office

    fobo_iam.jpg

Will Smith starrer 'I Am Legend' won its fourth straight weekend abroad and looks likely to cross the $300 million mark in foreign grosses.

Will Smith's "I Am Legend" remained stellar at the foreign box office, easily winning its fourth straight frame with $36.2 million from 5,000 prints in 47 markets.

"The Golden Compass" led the rest of the pack with its fourth consecutive second-place finish, grabbing $15 million at 5,600 in 54 territories.

In Australia, Fox debuted "27 Dresses" a week ahead of its domestic launch and took in $3.1 million -- the best Oz opening ever for a romantic comedy.

The one-two punch of "Legend" and "Compass" has kept international biz in the pink for the past month with combined offshore grosses approaching half a billion dollars. "Legend" has cumed $218 million internationally, trailing the pic's Stateside total by $22 million; "Compass" continues to shine, hitting $247 million overseas, nearly four times the domestic gross, in a performance highlighting the traction of fantasy fare outside the U.S.

With the top four pics combining for $80 million, overall biz finished ahead of the same frame a year ago, when "Night at the Museum" led with $19 million.

"I Am Legend" took in its top numbers via impressive launches in Germany with $9.1 million and Italy with $7.1 million, grossing a respective 57% and 48% of the top five films in those territories. Its third Brit frame, with $4.3 million, easily topped the launch of "Charlie Wilson's War," and its Aussie soph sesh of $3.1 million tied "27 Dresses" and edged the debut of "American Gangster."

With openings next frame in Brazil and Mexico and strong holdover biz, "Legend" should continue leading the foreign box office for several more weekends and finish its foreign run with more than $300 million, again underlining Smith's worldwide star power. His last two pics -- "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "I, Robot" -- combined for nearly $350 million overseas.

  2. Pretty bad movie. too short and the end was lame. and this is definately not worth a oscar noimination. just because he cryed? man, people even laughed at the serious scenes, there was always this comedic Willism again. One of his worst movies, pretty bad disappointment...

    Oh yeah...IAL is totally a comedy...no doubt... ¬¬

    Come on.

  3. Do you still believe what you told XXL in 2005, about Will Smith not being a real rapper? You also said, "The only real rappers out there right now are me, Kanye, 50 and maybe Jay. But Jay ain't in it like that no more."

That a crazy statement! [Laughs.] I look at that, and I'm like, Why did I say that? What I meant was ... I get so many comparisons to Will Smith. It's not a bad thing. It's a great thing. I do like Will a lot. Actually, after that interview, I called him personally and asked him to have a one-on-one with me in my trailer. So we talked everything out. What I meant by the comment was, at that moment, I had two No. 1 records already, and I was the only rapper who was headlining his own arena tour. And the only rappers that was hot at that moment — at that moment — was 50, Kanye, and Jay was on the Fade to Black thing. They didn't put all of that in the interview.

A surprise announcement at the conference, Don Eklund from Sony Pictures revealed that Sony Pictures will make available for download via BD-Live extra content. The example shown was a video from actor Will Smith regarding his film 'Hancock' with a sneak peak of the film specifically for CES. He did mention that he is a fan of Blu-ray.

  5. I love the movie...millions of people do. It's recent classic. Haters and book nerds can complain all they want. If u ain't got nuttin' nice 2 say...

Well, if you only want to hear positive opinions about the movie you'll know. That doesn't mean negative opinions are far from the truth. Let's remember we're all WS fans here.

  6. I said Will's performance is bad because he's trying to be funny in a serious movie, which makes people say he's not really acting, he's just being himself. That's basically due to a bad script. His useless comments (Del Spooner: "You must know my ex-wife"), jokes and all those things make people think the movie is a waste of time because they wanted to see a good (or at least decent) sci-fi movie, and they aren't seeing that at all.

This is the main reason why almost everyone thinks this movie was bad, and with this I mean critics and movie fans with some taste and knowledge about cinema. I don't pay attention to people that say this movie is good because they loved the special effects. If we don't have a convincing performance, the movie can't be good by any means. And no, there was no chemistry between Will and Bridget at all.

Of course each one has his opinion, and I respect it. But sometimes things are pretty obvious...

  7. A Win That Won’t Be Forgotten

DES MOINES (Posted Jan. 4, 2008) – Sen. Barack Obama took time to thank everyone during the V.I.P. reception where they gathered to celebrate his victory before heading to the packed convention center of more than 2,000 people.

Large-screen televisions in both corners of the room glared as Sen. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) spoke to the crowd gathered at her headquarters. Obama entered the room and recognized each individual with custom thanks and hugs for their contribution to the big win.

Actor Hill Harper, from the television show C.S.I. New York, has been on the campaign trail for Obama for months. “This is my third trip to Iowa,” he told me. A native of the state – he was born in Iowa City – he came home to help the candidate he believed in. “He’s the best candidate and it was a resounding victory,” Harper said.

“We ran the most positive campaign, nothing negative about anybody,” Hill said. Hill focused on reaching out to college student along with friend and fellow actress, Tatyana Ali.

“I’ve been here three days, reaching out to college students and some high school students too,” Ali said. ‘It went so well, I was knocking door-to-door on dorm rooms all over the state,” she laughed.

Ali, best known as Ashley on the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, was a political science major, but this was her first experience campaigning for a candidate. “I never felt like this for any candidate; he’s going to lead us into to the next century,” she predicted.

Both Hill and Ali joined Obama on the stage during his victory speech. The outreach for the younger voters appears to have worked for Obama; he racked up the youth vote 1 to 5.

Obama told the crowd, “Years from now we’ll look back at this moment and remember this was the place where we believed in hope.”

Obama’s signature salute was met with cheers and screams, “Change is coming to American.”

    Yes, change is a comin’!
