Queen Latifah Comes to Jada Pinkett Smith's Rescue



A loving friend is someone to lean on, as Jada Pinkett Smith experienced first hand.

While presenting Queen Latifah with the Power Award at the third annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, Pinkett Smith became choked up over the recent passing of her father, who succumbed to a heart attack.

"My father died last week, and I'm flying tomorrow to bury him," said Pinkett Smith, 38. "But I wanted to come because when those types of losses happen a lot of things get illuminated and your priorities fall in line."

She added, "When I think about Latifah I think about a woman who makes me feel loved. She can sit in the throne of my soul and just be there with me. She makes me laugh."

Unable to continue her speech due to a heavy flow of tears, Pinkett Smith found herself on stage alone and unable to speak – until Latifah came up to stand beside her.

"This is what I'm talking about," Pinkett Smith, said, picking up her introduction. "I don't see her a lot, but she's my girl."

Season two of TNT’s HawthoRNe has just begun filming and the show’s Michael Vartan tells me his character, Dr. Tom Wakefield, is headed for a hot and heavy romance with series star Jada Pinkett Smith’s Dr. Christina Hawthorne. “We get it on very early,” says Michael, reminding that season one concluded with the two friendly docs holding hands after she dumped her dead hubby’s ashes into the ocean. “I think it’s a good time for this to happen because you never know how long a show’s going to run, so go full steam while you can.”

The Alias alum tells me has no problem puckering up to Will Smith’s wife. “Luckily, Will likes me, because he’s like 6’4’’ and 230 pounds,” jokes Michael, a pet lover who popped up as a presenter at the Genesis Awards, which honors positive media representations of animal issues. “If he didn’t like me, I’d be dead.”

Having recently popped the question to girlfriend, Lauren Skaar, Michael, 41, says Jada “was thrilled” with his engagement news. “She’s been through the process as it’s progressed over the last year, so she was very happy for us.”
