I love his flow on "Godzilla". He seriously races the rhyme as you get into the song. I just find the beat hard to swallow. The guy on the hook does nothing for me. He sounds like everyone on urban radio.

I've previewed it. It didn't grab me as much as his first few albums, but I did at least generally like what I heard. I haven't gotten into the lyrics yet. Like most of his recent projects, the production goes from bad to good. I do love "Darkness".

I was just introduced to this song. I'm pretty sure I never heard it before as a kid. I'm a big fan of Freestyle music and always want to explore, but never seem to have the time. This just dropped in my lap. Strangely, this particular song isn't sung by the actual artist (though he did perform it live). It's actually sung by Elan Lanier.

If he doesn't want to commit to an album yet, he should just drop singles on a regular basis. All the songs we've heard on his social media that hasn't released are a missed opportunity.

I really loved this movie. I can't believe it didn't grab more hype. I also can't believe that anyone pays any attention to critics anymore. With the internet anybody can be a critic. The Blu-Ray/DVD release is January 14th, so I can't wait to pick it up. Buying it is the best way to give the film some extended life.

What's up, friends. Tim has been kind enough to keep this forum active in a time when message boards just aren't that popular anymore. Adult life can suck and take up some time, but I'm wondering if some of us could make it a point to use the forum more frequently. As we closed out another year, I was thinking about times happier and more carefree. Those times involved good music, good people, and socializing here (and elsewhere on the internet). I'm wondering who else might commit to checking the forum and posting more frequently. It's almost a slap in the face for Tim to keep the forum up and us not use it.

Gang Starr Announces First New Album In 16 Years, Shares New Song

The album is titled, One of the Best Yet.
Following the release of the group’s first single in 16 years, Gang Starr has now announced their first new album in 16 years.

Titled One of the Best Yet, the album’s 16 tracks are produced solely by DJ Premier and features J. Cole, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, M.O.P. and others. Premier started working on the album in September 2017 (seven years after Guru’s death) while an urn with Guru’s ashes sat atop his production console.
“I never lost faith, or wavered. I still felt it inside of me, it just happened to be nine years later (after Guru’s passing),” Premier said in a press release for the album. “We all want the things we want right now, but I am a patient guy. I hung in there and I just kept believing.”
“This album means everything to me. It’s a continuation of what I never wanted to end,” Premier added. “It’s a very foreign place for me and very emotional. I get happy, sad, excited; my feelings are kind of all over the place. But predominantly, just very happy to be making music with Guru again.”
Along with the album’s announcement, Gang Starr has shared another track from the album titled “Bad Name.”
One of the Best Yet is expected to drop November 1, 2019. Check out the tracklist below.

I saw this. There's too few details at this point to get excited or annoyed. I trust that Will wouldn't do anything with the show that would discredit it, but to pull off something as equally good would be quite a task.

This was fun to watch. Truth be told I don't ever recall "Freakin' It" playing on the radio, and only recall seeing the music video played two or three times. I kind of wish the waited to release The Will Smith Video collection so that it included this video. "Freakin' It" was intended to be the first single off of the album. I remember seeing traces of it being prepared before Willennium was fully announced. Timing the Y2K craze resulted in "Will 2K" being the first single. "Freakin' It" was easily a Columbia choice. They wanted a pop hit in the form of "Jiggy", but they messed it up since nearly every song on the album is better than it. Willennium was a great time. A Touch of Jazz was all over the album and Will spent more time in Philly for it's creating and promotion.

I was just about to post the B.E.P. video. I think it's kinda strange that the film doesn't come out until January and they dropped a single from the soundtrack. I prefer B.E.P. classic Hip-Hop (check their last album, if you haven't), but I still really like this. I love the color in the video, too.

Classic Hip-Hop fans, in case you didn't know, Skyzoo + Pete Rock just dropped an album called Retropolitan. I ordered what I assume is a limited pressing of the CD and I'm vibing to it right now. I'm sure a handful of you will love it.

It looks like Scarface is hanging up the mic. It was strange, because I saw a Geto Boys farewell tour announced shortly after Bushwick Bill announced that he was battling cancer. I almost got tickets, but then Bill went to the hospital. The shows were canceled. Bill passed away shortly after, seemingly sooner than he led on. I didn't even see this news, which was apparently announced the same day Bill passed away. If you remember, there was news that he passed away in the morning, but then his family confirmed that he was fighting for his life. He passed away that evening. Scarface must have made the announcement in the middle of the day. He seems to have his focus on the right things, so I wish him success, but I still think he had another decade worth of music in him.

‘Scarface is dead’: The Geto Boys rapper says he’s focused on running for Houston City Council

June 11, 2019“Scarface is dead,” said Brad Jordan.
He may be better known by the alias he used in his hip-hop career as a member of the Geto Boys, the provocative trio that helped put Southern rap on the map in the late 1980s, but after announcing a run for Houston City Council, Jordan said in an interview Tuesday he wants to be remembered for a life in public service.
“I’m not going to be a 75-year-old rapper,” he said with a laugh. "I’m going to be finishing my last term in office as president when I’m 75.”
The Houston native, 48, announced his candidacy to represent District D, which covers much of the southern part of the city where he grew up, in an Instagram post Sunday. Four days earlier, current District D council member Dwight Boykins, whom Jordan calls a good friend, announced plans to vacate the seat to run for mayor.
City officials confirmed that Jordan had filed his appointment of a campaign treasurer, although he has until Aug. 19 to file as a candidate on the Nov. 5 ballot, when all 16 council seats will be contested.
Jordan said he had already set his sights on the council seat, which he sees as an opportunity to address the issues affecting the community where he lives, but didn’t expect Boykins to leave the seat for another four years.
“But four years came in a matter of 24 hours,” he said. “When he vacated that seat, it was my time to go ahead and move toward that seat, because I grew up there, I know a lot of people there, I know what the issues are.”
Jordan’s announcement came just hours before a fellow Geto Boy, Bushwick Bill, died Sunday at age 52, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. In his first Instagram post after announcing his run for office, the man formerly known as Scarface posted a photo of a smiling Bill.
The Geto Boys rose to prominence amid controversy around the violent and sexually explicit lyrics they said reflected the reality they saw in their Houston neighborhood. In 1991, Jordan told The Washington Post that “Scarface is just a character.”
But it was 1991′s “Mind Playing Tricks on Me,” a more vulnerable song exploring the psychic impact of that hard reality, that was their biggest hit. Jordan also released several solo albums as Scarface on the way to earning a reputation as an elder statesman of hip-hop.
After the height of the Geto Boys’ fame, Jordan helped launch the careers of rappers such as Ludacris as head of Def Jam South in the early 2000s. His campaign announcement was met with expressions of support on Instagram from hip-hop artists including MC Lyte, 2 Chainz, Bun B and Slim Thug.
But in recent years, Jordan has sought to move beyond his identity as an MC.“I don’t even want to be that guy no more,” he told Fox 26′s Isiah Carey in 2017.
Jordan would be the most prominent rapper to win elected office, but he isn’t the first to try. The Fugees’ Wyclef Jean was disqualified when he sought the presidency of his native Haiti in 2010, and last year Dupré “DoItAll” Kelly, of the Lords of the Underground, got fewer than 5 percent of the votes when ran for an at-large city council seat in Newark.
Jordan said his priorities include education and job training, reentry programs for formerly incarcerated people, and addressing the city’s infrastructure and vulnerability to flooding. He has already focused on those issues through his nonprofit group, the Positive Purpose Movement, organizing backpack drives for schools and employing locals as debris monitors when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017.
“I’m super-passionate when it comes to the people,” he said. “This is the district that I’m from, and I recognize the problems. But I don’t want to point the finger at the problems. I just want to be responsible for the solutions.”
A year ago, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner declared June 26 “Scarface Day.” After thanking the mayor — and his mother — Jordan seemed to use the occasion to mark a transition.
“You know me as Scarface,” he told the council, “but now you get the opportunity to meet Brad Jordan. … I really want to let you all know that I’m getting ready to make a super impact in the community because that’s the most important thing to me right now.”

Man, maybe I need to see it again. I thought it was alright. Just alright. It didn't feel like a Bad Boys movie to me. I thought some of the dialogue and comedy was weak and forced. The beginning of it felt very rushed. Dipping into the super natural was just weird. Poorly singing "Bad Boys" is only funny for so long. I don't see a lot of Michael Bay films, but I feel that the Bad Boys movies were where he excelled and I miss his directing style and use of color lighting. I really hate that one bold decision they made. Since I no longer have expectations for it, maybe I'll enjoy it more if I see it again...but I don't really have a desire to see it in theaters again.
