  1. Oh, wow. This is definitely not a polished and presentable moment. There are a lot of memes, YouTube videos, and articles coming out that are focusing on Jada in the second phase of all this. I don't want to pin the negativity on her, because none of us know her personally. The media likes to speak negatively about strong women. Especially strong, black women. They jump to conclusions about women who don't try to be "America's sweetheart". It's worth pointing out that none of those who know her personally are saying bad things about her, at least not that I've seen. I remember watching an entertainment show back when Bad Boys first came out. The media's angle on Will and Jada showing that they were together was taking the angle that she was the "bad girl" that seemed a misfit for him. Then they turned into a power couple and everyone loved them. It seems like this "redefining" of their relationship is accommodating Jada, where as much of their relationship before this was accommodating Will. Ultimately everyone should be happy. If that's them, good. If it's not and this "redefining" an upgrade for both of them, it's time to take steps where they can be happy and completely themselves.
  2. I always find it strange when people announce things like this. Look, do what you will with the content. I don't think anybody really cares, especially since you have no history on this forum. I'm actually finding his music and other projects to be a way of finding peace over the recent incident.
  3. I totally forgot about this game until recently. I purchased it on Amazon and it's on its way to me as we speak. I just wanted to give the heads up to those of you in the US that it's currently 25% off on Amazon. They have six of them left. Here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0981D3WFT?psc=1&smid=A19KC8ZZC201US&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp
  4. The idea of him being canceled is laughable. Let's be honest, what artists have truly been canceled. Some of them have taken a hit in their status, but virtually no one has been completely pushed out of the limelight. The reason this is so big is because Will is one of the biggest entertainers in the world and he fell hard one on of the biggest stages in the world. There are those with an emotional connection to it and those simply trying to ride the coattails of it. We know Will's character. Most entertainers are condemning the slap while clarifying that they have no ill will for him because we all know his true character.
  5. The event has been covered so much at this point that I think a lot of people are getting sick of it. I think the media will start to slowly let go until the Red Table Talk or some other related event involving Will or Chris occurs. If you scour YouTube, you'll find much more diverse opinions that place blame here and there. Jada is taking heat in a lot of it. That memes are still coming. Occasionally I feel guilty for finding some of them kind of funny. I was randomly looking at items on ebay and there's quite a few shirts with memes and pictures of the slap on it. I think that once we REALLY hear from Will and Chris, it will truly start to taper off with a sense of closure.
  6. I think this is an important read. Yes, Will carries the weight for most of the disaster, but Chris Rock needs to carry his part. https://toofab.com/2022/03/31/chris-rock-summer-of-soul-joseph-patel/ Oscar Winner Joseph Patel Calls Chris Rock an 'Absolute F---ing D---', Will Smith 'Selfish' for Slap Award ShowsBy TooFab Staff|3/31/2022 9:18 AM PT "What both Will AND Chris did really stained what should have been a beautiful moment for us," says the Summer of Soul producer. While a lot of heat has been thrown in Will Smith's direction following the slap seen 'round the world during the Oscars, one winner from Sunday's ceremony is calling out Chris Rock for disrespect as well. Though many viewers were, uh, distracted and quickly took to Twitter to sound off on what they had just witnessed, the show went on for Rock, who then presented the award for Best Documentary. The trophy went to "Summer of Soul," with Questlove (real name Ahmir Thompson) accepting the honor alongside Robert Fyvolent, David Dinerstein, and Joseph Patel (left, above). But Rock ticked off at least one of those winners by referring to them as "Ahmir Thompson and four white guys" when announcing the award. "The reason that makes me SO SO VERY ANGRY is because I was so proud to be one of a handful of South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the history of the award," tweeted Patel, who is Indian-American, on Wednesday. "I was ecstatic that I was the 3RD South Asian to win that night," he added, referring to earlier wins for Riz Ahmed and Aneil Karina for Best Live Action Short. "Three South Asians winning on the same night – that's never happened before! And it’s meaningful! It’s history!" "I'm a big boy — I can take a joke. Comedians make jokes. But not in that moment," he added. "What a s----y, disrespectful thing to do. I got back home to New York last night and saw the ceremony on my DVR and didn't have the stomach to watch it. I probably never will." "Thank you, Chris – You absolute f---ing dick," he continued. Patel was also frustrated that Smith's slap "robbed" them of their moment in the sun. "I think what Will did was selfish. It robbed the category of its moment. It robbed the other excellent and amazing films of their moment to be acknowledged in what was a STRONG year for docs," he continued. "And it robbed Summer of Soul and our team of our moment. Of a loud, enthusiastic cheer for a celebrated film." "I never need a statue to tell me how nice I am – but it sure helps," he added. "And what both Will AND Chris did really stained what should have been a beautiful moment for us. Also it goes without saying I speak for me and me alone. Not Ahmir and not our coproducers." Patel later deleted his tweets because, as he put it, "we reached the unproductive portion of the viral Twitter thread." He added, "I said what I needed to say and feel at peace with it. Some of y'all are weirdos." Smith did issue a public mea culpa on Instagram following the ceremony, saying he "reacted emotionally" to "a joke about Jada's medical condition" and apologized to Rock for his "out of line" actions. "I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world," he added.
  7. Yo, this is good! I love this. Do you still remix songs?
  8. It's expected that within a week of an unusual event like this, Will's projects would be scrutinized by some. Movies experience various delays all the time. I don't expect anything to really change. A lot of movies take a year to come out. A year from now nobody is going to be shocked by this and the dust will have settle. I expect Will's reputation and position will mostly be restored. It's all business and media play at the moment.
  9. Yes, that zoom with JJ+FP and Charlie was the most natural I've seen Will in front of a camera in awhile. The energy and the comedy just flowed.
  10. I think that as long as the script is good, the Bad Boys movies can keep coming. I feel the same way about the MIB movies. I actually thought Bad Boys 4 Life was kind of leaning toward average. The super natural aspect of it was just kind of weird to me. I'd like to see another one without that aspect.
  11. M.C. Hammer at 60: You Can’t Touch His Daily Routine (Photo by Rich Polk/Getty Images for Capitol Music Group) Stanley Kirk Burrell, better known to many as M.C. Hammer, had his biggest success in the 1980’s and 90’s as a rapper with hits like, “Let’s Get It Started,” “2 Legit 2 Quit,” and “U Can’t Touch This.” Nearly 30 years later, the now 60-year-old rapper, dancer, minister and entrepreneur spends much of his time speaking, doing appearances, watching his investments in the tech world and staying fit. All of which boils down to his daily routine. On Marriage: Hammer has been married to his wife for over 35 years! They have five children and she’s been with him before the fame, through it and still with him after it. Hammer simply says, “You have wealth when you have a family. Family is all that I need.” Praying for them, listening to them and taking his wife and family with him on his travels is apart of Hammer’s routine of building a close, tight-knit family. (Photo credit: @MCHammer Instagram) On Fighting Depression: “Ask my wife and she’ll tell you that after 25 years, my mood never changes whatever stuff is being thrown at me. Growing up in such an adverse situation — my mom and eight siblings shared a cramped house in a rough part of California — it toughens you, and you learn how to keep your cool no matter what.” On Staying Fit “It goes back to what you eat, the way you work out, the hours that you put in training and mastering your craft. It all comes into play. Then you gotta love it; love it like it’s not a task. I look forward to working out. I love going to the gym. I love dancing. And so I look at it like a sport, and I understand it as a sport, and then I understand the give and take of the energy. I give my energy to people and they return the energy. It’s very spiritual and it’s very intimate. All of that kind of just creates a special environment. “You know what the secret is? The secret is God. When you have Him, you have an endless supply of youth and of energy. With God, plus working out and eating right, it’s a great mix. For the past 20 years, I’ve started each morning with a shake that includes protein powder, fresh and frozen green vegetables, a multivitamin for men, 2 mg of fish oils and four capsules of glucosamine to keep my joints supple. It keeps my immune system pretty robust — I haven’t had a cold or flu in 20 years” “I let my music and my lifestyle speak for itself. In my music and the upcoming project as well, I address specifically mental health and focus on mental health along with obviously trying to be in condition. So that’s the way I address it.” On Dancing: “I dance up and down the stairs! I also try to make it to the dance studio twice a week and my five kids often come with me. You gotta learn to love keeping fit — get your favorite music on and work your body to the rhythm of the beat.” “It’s all on a Hammer excellence level of performance and have the fun and bring the fun, the joy of the culture to these new generations. And so in order to do that, you got to be in top condition. I mean, performing is nothing like it on the planet. I’ve got my football player friends … they get out there for about five minutes and say, ‘Hammer, you crazy. How can you go at that level for a hour and a half?’” On Sleeping: “I average between four and five hours a night,” admits Hammer. “I can’t go to bed before 1am either; I have to stay up, whether watching tv or catching up on mail. I suppose that’s the musician in me being used to operating into the night. You have to do what works for your body.” March 30, 2022 by Gerald Payne https://blackdoctor.org/mc-hammer-workout/?fbclid=IwAR0C5mUWlVpIC7_ZI1FgjRSZ59UlSc2clZ41CViguXK-avrnjrjSuBKNacQ
  12. This probably isn't even worth sharing this. The bottom of the article it asks if we're upset we won't get another Bad Boys film, yet it only rumors a pause in the project without providing a source. The script isn't finished. Of course Will has to address some other things this week. The reggae group Inner Circle has posted videos will Will this week, congratulating him on the Oscar win and plugging Bad Boys 4 news on the horizon. https://comicbook.com/movies/news/bad-boys-4-reportedly-on-pause-after-will-smith-oscar-slap/ Bad Boys 4 Reportedly on Pause After Will Smith Oscar Slap By NATHANIEL BRAIL - April 1, 2022 09:03 pm EDT The slap that no one can stop talking about continues to make waves for Academy Award-winner Will Smith. As you probably already know, this past Sunday at the Academy Awards, Smith slapped Chris Rock for a joke the comedian made about Jada Pinkett-Smith while on stage at the awards show. The actor has already released an apology to Rock and the awards show, and now it's affecting one of his upcoming projects. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the iconic actor's actions have caused Sony Pictures to pause the upcoming fourth Bad Boys film. "Is there any immediate effect on his projects? Well, here's one tidbit we've heard this week: Bad Boys 4 had been in active development, and Smith received 40 pages of the script before the Oscars incident," The trade notes. "according to our sources. Now there will be a ... pause ... in work as things play out, we've been told." Earlier this evening, Smith was even forced to resign from The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences. The actor is currently under investigation for his actions and has agreed to do whatever they decide. Smith also released an official statement on his resignation from the Academy. "I have directly responded to the Academy's disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate. Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason." What do you think about the Will Smith situation? Are you upset there won't be another Bad Boys film? Let us know your thoughts either in the comments section or by hitting our writer @NateBrail up on Twitter!
  13. This was definitely the right thing to do. Being a part of the Academy doesn't mean much. One of my acquaintances is a member of the equivalent for the Grammy's. He's says it's good to be a part of it if you're in the industry, but overall it's not that important. This is the one thing Will could do in his power to show that he knows the wrong that he did. His words are perfect. He's found his center again, at least to a certain degree. I'm proud of him for the steps he's taking.
  14. When I saw MC Hammer live in 2019, it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I wish he had a better business team when it comes to releasing his music and promoting his brand. He's so talented and likable, but most people don't think he's done anything since 90's Happy B-Day to one of the best to ever do it.
  15. I saw the news that the Academy wasn't honest about asking him to leave, or giving him mixed messages. I think it's important to get that straight. Let will pay the consequences for what he did. Not what he didn't do. The whole situation is bizarre, so I don't really blame anyone bystanders for how they handled it.
  16. Tim, I think you kind of went for the jugular in your blog. Much of it is an opinion article, choosing to report on things from a specific angle, as if you're trying to drag Will down. I was surprised when I read that he was asked to leave and didn't. Like Lerkot said, if they really wanted him to leave, he would have been removed. They were trying to save their stuck up reputation, but clearly not all that worried about it because security or police could have removed him. The video of Jada is actually showing her laughing at Chris, as opposed to the slap. There might be some people who are hesitating to work with Will for a minute, but providing we don't see anything like this again, it's not going to hurt his career much. Will is often one of the producer on his own films. Many people know him personally and know that what we saw the other night was not his character. That's why most people are saying something about his actions, but not him in general. If anything, I think he'll be banned from the Oscars for a few years or permanently. Only a small handful of his movies are the type that were the kind that were going to get Oscar attention, so I expect he'll get through this mostly unscathed when it's all settled.
  17. So many people in this group are against Red Table Talk. I think that's a little ridiculous. Yes, the way Jada's involvement with August during a time that they were virtually separated was too much, but otherwise, the show is good. I haven't gotten to watch it in awhile, but they've addressed some great topics and handled it well. I do think it would be best of Chris Rock was invited and that he has equal platform. The idea of Will and Chris doing a comedic Veruz is actually pretty genius. If they can mend their relationship and sit down, celebrating and laughing at each other's moments in film and making jokes, I feel that would put a huge band-aid on the moment. On a related note, I saw this. As usual, is appears that Puffy is a lying piece of trash who's trying to piggy back on others for attention. However, is this really considered a beef? https://www.xxlmag.com/chris-rock-brother-diddy-lied-will-smith/ Chris Rock's brother spoke out against Diddy's claim that Will Smith and Chris Rock made amends after the Oscars. Last night (March 29), Chris Rock's brother, comedian Tony Rock, held a Q&A on Twitter. He responded to numerous questions regarding Will Smith slapping his brother onstage at the Oscars this past weekend. One particular question about Diddy's reported confirmation that Smith and Rock had already made up the day following the ceremony has garnered a lot of attention. A Twitter user asked, "@TONYROCK so Diddy was lying when he said Chris and Will made up that night and are good now?" Tony simply responded, "Yep." In a separate response to another question, Tony made it clear that Smith and Rock's beef is most definitely still on. "Are we fighting fire with fire or going the professional route?" a user asked. "It's on bro," Rock responded. As aforementioned, on the morning following the slap (March 28), Diddy reportedly told Page Six that Smith and Rock had already made amends. "That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that,” Diddy supposedly told the publication at Vanity Fair's post-Oscars party. “It’s all love. They’re brothers,” he added. Smith shocked the entertainment world Sunday night (March 27) by slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett's struggles with alopecia. Smith apologized directly to Rock early Monday evening in a statement published to his Instagram. "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris," he began. "I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness." He continued: "I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us." Rock has yet to issue any statement or comments on what took place.
  18. For the most part, I don't really care what people's opinions are, so I haven't posted the ones that I've come across, but the one is more relevant than most. https://ew.com/tv/fresh-prince-actress-janet-hubert-defends-will-smith-oscar-slap/ 'Fresh Prince' actress Janet Hubert defends Will Smith's Oscar jab: 'Sometimes you have to slap back' After Sunday night's incident between Chris Rock and the King Richard star, Smith's longtime colleague came to his defense. By Andrea TowersMarch 28, 2022 at 12:20 PM EDT Family looks out for family... even when it's the "slap heard around the world." Following Will Smith and Chris Rock's onstage incident during Sunday night's Oscar telecast, the Philly-born actor's own Aunt Viv — the original Aunt Viv, mind you — stepped in to defend him. Janet Hubert, who played the role of matriarch Vivian Banks on the original Fresh Prince of Bel Air series for three seasons, hasn't been shy over the years about her feelings towards Smith and her co-stars, the two recently reconciled in an HBO Max Reunion special. But it seems like mending that rift went a long way, as Hubert was unapologetically on the side of her on-screen son. "So PROUD OF YOU!" Hubert wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of Smith giving his acceptance speech. "Yes, there is only so much one can take...sometimes you have to slap back. Celebrate the win...nothing else matters. Both actions were incorrect but Chris didn't need to go there." Hubert also went on to throw some of her own shade at Rock, finishing the post by saying, "Met him once.... it was enough for me.... very mean spirited." The tense moment between Smith and Rock occurred more than halfway through the 94th annual Academy Awards when Rock, who had stepped onstage to present the award for best documentary, made an off-the-cuff joke about Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith referencing her shaved head. Smith then stormed the stage, slapped Rock, and sat back down before yelling at him, "keep my wife's name out of your f---ing mouth." Will Smith and Janet Hubert | CREDIT: ANGELA WEISS/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES; ROB KIM/GETTY IMAGES Less than an hour later, the actor accepted his first Best Actor award for the role as Venus and Serena Williams' father in King Richard. Smith attempted to apologize for his actions during his acceptance speech, saying "love will make you do crazy things," adding, "I hope the Academy invites me back." As most of social media remains shocked at the incident, Hubert isn't the only one defending the actor. Tiffany Haddish called the moment "the most beautiful thing she's ever seen" and noted that "as a woman, who has been unprotected, that meant the world to me." As of now, Rock has decided not to press charges with the Los Angeles Police Department over the altercation.
  19. I'd love a remastered and expanded version of Rock The House that includes that pre-Jive versions of some of the songs, the alternate mixes off of the singles, "New Kids On The Block" and the mega mix. That album had little impact on pop culture, though. Its success was primarily limited to the Hip-Hop scene.
  20. I'm struggling with the ideal that that what we saw was part of a mental breakdown. Sure, it could be, but at the same time, sometimes stuff just happens. I don't know. I do know that by doing it this way, Will can't be directed in what he says. This easily the kind of situation where he could be misquoted. Being misquoted is why people like Rev Run and Michael Jackson rarely do/did interviews. When I first heard the news of what went down, my next thought was "there will be a Red Table Talk."
  21. This just in... https://radaronline.com/p/will-smith-talking-chris-rock-smack-jada-red-table-talk/ Will Smith & Jada To Break Silence About Chris Rock Oscars Smack On 'Red Table Talk' By:Ryan Naumann Mar. 28 2022, Published 11:47 a.m. ET Will Smith is turning down invites from Good Morning America and The Today Show to talk about the Chris Rock incident and has decided he will spill his guts on Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Red Table Talk. Sources close to the situation tell Radar, Will and his team have been bombarded with offers from outlets pleading with the Academy Award winner to choose them as his outlet to talk about Chris. However, we’re told Will and Jada had a conversation where they agreed the situation will be addressed on Jada’s super-successful Facebook show. Will skipped the press line last night after winning the Best Actor award for his role in King Richard. We’re told he even refused to talk to reporters at the afterparties. SOURCE: MEGA Sources tell us Will and Jada will tape the episode as early as this week. The famous couple feels like this is the best platform for him to explain his side of things clearly — with him being invited to next year’s ceremony in limbo after he got physical with the comedian. As Radar previously reported, Chris appeared to announce the Best Documentary Feature Film award but decided to do a set of jokes before revealing the winner. He decided to come for Jada's appearance by making a joke about her being bald. He said the actress was ready to appear in GI Jane 2 — a reference to the 1997 Demi Moore film that she famously shaved her head to get into the role. The issue is Jada has been open about her struggle with alopecia — a condition that can cause an individual to lose their hair. It affects every person different and hair loss can be temporary or permanent. Jada was not impressed with the joke and clearly Will noticed his wife being upset. He immediately sprung into action and quickly walked up the stage to Chis. He proceeded to smack the comedian in the face, turn around, and then walk back to his seat. Chris Rock acknowledge the smack but then continued on with handing out the award. During the commercial break, Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry walked up to talk to Will. Will's publicist Meredith O'Sullivan was seen doing damage control in the moments after the on-stage slap. Chris has yet to make a public statement but declined to press charges against Will. During his acceptance speech, Will seemed to talk about the moment telling the crowd, "I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse, and you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta be able to have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and you gotta pretend like that‘s OK." He added, "But Richard Williams, and what I loved, thank you D. Denzel (Washington) said to me a few minutes ago, he said, “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.”
  22. I think it would be the right decision, if he has it in him. He has seemed distant from music for awhile. He got the Oscar. Whoopi confirmed that it won't be taken away from him. He's put himself in a position where some people are justifiably unhappy with him, so more "Will Smith the actor" is not what we need right now. I think laying the cut and reconnecting with music is ideal. Reintroduce himself doing something that isn't aligning himself with the movie industry. Reintroduce himself with what many of us were introduced to him through. The thing is, nobody REALLY wants to hear modern Will Smith. They want to hear classic Fresh Prince. I like the songs his done over the past 10-15 years to various degrees, but they mostly involved him accommodating new styles and compromising for modern times. I don't think most people want that. They want classic Hip-Hop. They want story telling. The want jokes. They want positive energy. If he get do that, I think he'll be golden. That being said, it's hard to have the old school mind state of doing a full album and expecting comparable success. During the Lost + Found era, Hip-Hop still had influence from the 80's and 90's. That's long gone and never celebrated by the masses. He needs to make an album for the grown and sexy crowd and not worry about the mass appeal. He needs his support system back. Obviously, that's DJ Jazzy Jeff, and possibly some of his legendary peers. So yeah, put that Oscar on the shelf, and let music be that therapy. Spent a couple month in Philly. Reset. Remind people of your greatness. p.s. DefCEM, I'm surprised how you're taking this. How set in stone your new opinion is. Will had a bad moment. It was an isolated incident. He gave a tactless warning slap to someone who's joke was at the expense of his wife. He didn't beat some helpless person up. This isn't an ongoing thing that shows a true character flaw. If we were all judged by our worst moment and mistakes, we'd all be pretty terrible people. Many of us worse than what Will is being criticized for at the moment.
  23. I think the writer, like many people, made up their mind that the apology wasn't good enough before it was even issued. They don't approve of Will and that's fine. He did something rash and now he'll pay the consequences. This is clearly seen in the very first line - "in the cold, harsh light of global condemnation". Really? Because there are many people who have justified his act by Chris' tactless joke. This is just as much an opinion article as it is a news article. Was Chris Rock hanging out during the commercial breaks? I highly doubt it. It would have been foolish for him to. If he was, he would have gotten attention from his peers, too. Will is clearly in the wrong, but you can't say that Chris is in the right. As for partying afterward, what else are you going to do? When you see the pictures taken after he won, Will definitely looks a bit off. He's processing the wrong he did. He knew he was going to have to really face it the next day. He was troubled and wanted to get a few hours of distraction. I can't be mad at that. Look, this happened less than 48 hours ago. The aftermath has just started. It's silly to say what his "good enough" in terms of his following actions. For some people, no apology would ever be good enough. For some people, it would have never been fast enough.
  24. I think the statement is fine for now. I have no doubts that he'll do a proper video or a Red Table Talk in the near future. A lot of what we're seeing reported right now is vague and recycled. This article is a little more informative of what is happening in the wake of things. https://blackamericaweb.com/2022/03/28/academy-condemns-will-smiths-actions-launches-review/?fbclid=IwAR1brAmpJRV_sBsG1ZhK9GoCEjQd4_PoWHKEw1aS41hi2Hryg3jxmPSW-QE Academy Condemns Will Smith’s Actions, Launches Review AP LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Monday condemned the actions of Will Smith during Sunday night’s Oscars and launched an inquiry into his slapping of presenter Chris Rock. In a statement Monday, the film academy said: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.” The fallout from Smith’s onstage assault continued Monday, as Hollywood and the public continued to wrestle with a moment that stunned the Dolby Theatre crowd and viewers at home, and may have passed all others — even that gold-standard flub, EnvelopeGate — in Academy Awards infamy. Smith stunned the Dolby Theatre crowd and viewers at home when he took the stage during Rock’s remarks after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith’s wife. Rock said, “Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.” The joke touched a nerve. Pinkett Smith, whose head is shaved, has spoken publicly about her alopecia diagnosis. Smith strode on stage and slapped Rock across the face. Back in his seat, Smith twice shouted for Rock to “get my wife’s name out your (expletive) mouth.” His words echoed clearly throughout the Dolby, though ABC cut the audio for about 15 seconds. Within an hour, Smith won best actor. During his acceptance speech, Smith apologized to the academy. After the show Sunday night, the academy posted a statement condemning violence. The Los Angeles Police Department said Sunday it was aware of the incident but not pursuing an investigation because the person involved declined to file a police report. Some academy members, like writer-producer Marshall Herskovitz, called for the academy to take disciplinary action against Smith. “He disgraced our entire community tonight,” wrote Herskovitz on Twitter. Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Academy’s board of governors, said Monday on “The View”: “We’re not going to take that Oscar from him. There will be consequences, I’m sure.” A sense of disbelief hung in the air at the Dolby Theatre after Smith’s assault, and it didn’t dissipate Monday. Not only was it a hard-to-fathom break with decorum on live national television — an incident so dramatic, even movie-like, that many initially assumed it was a staged bit — it seemed wildly out of character for one of Hollywood’s most relentlessly upbeat sta All of this less than an hour before Smith reached possibly the climactic moment of his career, winning his first Oscar, for best actor. “In a way, I feel bad for Will Smith, too, because I think he let his emotions get the better of him, and this should have been one of the great nights of his life,” said former Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel on Bill Simmons’ podcast. “And now it’s not. Was there anyone who didn’t like Will Smith an hour ago in the world? Like no one, right? Now he doesn’t have a single comedian friend — that’s for sure.” Some questioned whether Smith should have been allowed to continue to sit front and center after smacking Rock. Several stars rushed to counsel and calm Smith, including Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Tyler Perry. But the timing was also awkward because the best actor category was due up soon after, and Smith had long been considered a lock for the award. “I know we’re all still processing, but the way casual violence was normalized tonight by a collective national audience will have consequences that we can’t even fathom in the moment,” wrote Janai Nelson, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, on Twitter. Representatives for Smith didn’t immediately return messages Monday. The joke that provoked Smith was not part of Rock’s routine during the rehearsals leading up to the show, according to two sources close to production who was not authorized to speak publicly. Rock had joked about Pinkett Smith before. He hosted the 2016 Oscars, when some were boycotting the ceremony over the #OscarsSoWhite group of nominees, including the Smiths. Said Rock: “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.” In the press room backstage, where winners take a few questions from the media, the academy tried to stifle questions about the incident, at one point stopping Jessica Chastain from talking about it. But that didn’t prevent the moment from overwhelming talk at the Oscar afterparties and beyond. Some came to Smith’s defense, including Tiffany Haddish, who co-starred with Pinkett Smith in “Girls Trip. “Maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me, it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives,” Haddish told People magazine. Smith, meanwhile, merrily posed for photographs with his family outside the Vanity Fair party. Inside, cell phone videos captured him dancing to “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” while clutching his Oscar. Their son Jaden tweeted: “And That’s How We Do It.” On Instagram, Smith posted: “Me ’n Jada Pinkett Smith got all dressed up to choose chaos.” The drama overshadowed some historical wins at an Oscars. The deaf family drama “CODA” became the first film with a largely deaf cast to win best picture. For the first time, a streaming service, Apple TV+, took Hollywood’s top honor, signaling a profound shift in Hollywood and in moviegoing. Ariana DeBose of “West Side Story” became the first Afro-Latina and the first openly LGBTQ actor to win best supporting actress. But as stunning as Smith’s slap was, it wasn’t shocking that such a pivotal moment in the actor’s life would play out in the public eye. Particularly in recent years, Smith has been among the most candid of stars. While Pinkett Smith’s Facebook series “Red Table Talk” has been a platform for airing family drama, Smith has chronicled his own journey in the YouTube series “The Best Shape in My Life,” which included one episode documenting Smith discussing his regrets as a parent with his children. Smith also penned, with personal-growth author Mark Manson, the memoir “Will,” published earlier this year. (It rocketed up Amazon sales rankings Monday to No. 32.) In it, he described how he was molded by his loving but hard-drinking and militaristic father. In one chapter, he recalls as a 9-year-old seeing him hit his mother. Guilt at not protecting his mother, Smith wrote, left with complicated feelings that he connects with fueling his own rise in show business. When his father was elderly and confined to a wheelchair, Smith confessed feeling an impulse to push him down a staircase. “My personal journey into the depths of the joys and traumas of my past are definitely helping me to expand and build out a greater emotional toolbox that will allow me to portray more complex characters,” Smith said last fall in an interview with The Associated Press. For Smith, playing Richard Williams, father to Venus and Serena, in “King Richard” brought together all of these deep-rooted emotions — and it won him the Oscar. It also might have compelled his actions Sunday. “Art imitates life,” Smith said accepting the award. “I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams.”

In a comment provided to Page Six, Diddy said there’s nothing but “love” between the two stars. “That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that,” Diddy said. “It’s all love. They’re brothers.” He didn’t offer up more than that, but Rock did decline to file a police report over the incident. During the ceremony, Diddy showed up on stage later and attempted to play peacemaker. “Will and Chris, we’re gonna solve that like family at the Gold Party,” he said. The incident occurred when Smith walked on stage and slapped Rock across the face after the comedian told a joke about Jada’s hair, suggesting that she should star in the sequel to G.I. Jane. Jada has previously opened up about her decision to shave her head last year, and said it was because she had been dealing with alopecia. “Wow, Will Smith just smacked the **** out of me,” Rock said after the slap, to which Smith responded, “Keep my wife’s name out your ****ing moment.” It took a moment for the comedian to collect himself, after which he added, “That was the greatest night in the history of television.” To add to the drama of the night, Smith walked home with Best Actor for his performance in King Richard, which he accepted just moments after he assaulted Rock. p.s.
